5.4 On the engine stand

Mainly just posting to vent about ford haha...i pulled the motor at a you pullit lot out of a 97 F-150....

so here goes.

First off im gona shake the hand of the ford designer who designed the 97 for kicking a friend and I's asses for 2 days using only hand tools.....

second im gona kick him in the nuts

third im gona woop his ass for designing that truck where the engine sits against the damn firewall so trasmission removal is almost impossible with out a crap load of socket extension changes and removing the whole upper intake.. and pulling both engine/tranny at once..

anyways its out its in its temporary home on the engine stand just waiting to get a pully puller to pull the crank pully so i can get the crank pully off so i can pull the timing cover off and the heads.

question though... anyone ever see it where a few rocker arms have actualy fallen off and sitting in bottom of the cam carrier area. wondering why this truck might have died. maybe lost timing and piston hitting valve cause a the rockers to get smacked off? chain when spinning the engine looked fine maybe a little loose.

You dont "need" a pulley puller for the crank. Just a pry bar and some patience. A mallet helps alot to.

haha will get them up tomorrow before work ;> it was snowing and we were playing in the mud at the pullit lot so didnt get any there of that disaster zone. and the castings on it are like a FE75 or something like that looking it up most likely i also have a forged crank ;> and she spins freely to im pretty hopefull a .01 or .02 bore crank polish some pistons rods. those wonderful parts on the way from you;> and some other goodies ;> either 270s or 278 cams or so... any idea with staying all engine and trying to get get a decent CR to run on 91 what dish should i get on pistons and placing PI heads on the NPI block. ied like to get a rough 10.5 CR on 91

go flat tops and you'll have 10.5 - 11 CR perfect for a NA motor with 278 cams in it...

if some of the rockers fell out with the cams in and torqued well in my experance those would be bent values, also if the piston hit the values then they are bent for sure. Take the heads off put them all back together and try to spin it by hand if it wont turn by hand 1. the cam could be locked up due to groves in the journal and cam not matching or the bent values

well its down to a crank/oil pump/rods/pistons and all i can say is the inside of the piston walls walls were great no scratches no dinged pistons and its getting PI heads anyways. maybe a 1/2 milimeter of ridge of piston ring wear. cant catch my nail on it its kinda rounded. but the oil pump and timing cover both had chain wear on the drivers side of engine "right" i beleive. groves on oil pump and timing cover were about 1/16 or 1/8th deep. chain was still intact but the black plastic guide was broke away from the 5/16 bolts and all gears teeth looked fine. but holy crap there was a ton of oil sludge on everything that touches oil and in chain tensioners. and your probaly right on bent valves those cylinders that were missing rockers had some ugly looking pistons till i took a wirewheel to them and they are still great.
