Button on gear shift

I'm having a very hard time putting my 1997 gt automatic in gear. The button on the gear shift will not go in especially when the car is cold. Can anyone help?

it may be the sensor on the brake. because the transmission wont go into gear if the brake isnt pressed.

Thanks! I will check it out. I'm taking the car to Florida on Saturday and will be able to work on it in my garage.

my buddy had a 96 gt auto with the same problem. i think the reason its harder to get into gear when its cold is because the trans fluid isnt warm and circulating. when its cold it makes it harder to force it into gear. his foot had actually caused some wires to separate, causing his sensor to fail.

i had this problem in my 00 GT, it was the switch on the brake pedal, it had shorted and melted the plug that went into it, i cut it out put two new female ends on it and it has worked fine for the last couple years since
