slack in drivetrain

in first and second gear especially when i let off of the gas then hit the gas again it feels like there is slack and it bucks. is this normal or is there something wrong? i have 87000 miles. more importantly how do i fix it.

Do you notice your shifter move back and forth by getting on and off of the gas?

It could also possibly be a driveshaft, or a u joint..

watch the u joint when you do it. the u joint should be solid and not have any movement. the drive shaft will move a little but not the joint.

you can just replace the u joints and it should be cheap. not sure how much. if you get a new drive shaft go with an alum. one for sure.

iv noticed the same thing in my car. although my shifter shakes quite a bit. sometimes around a half an inch to 3/4 inch. although it still works fine so i never gave it too much thought.

i know that will jerk but im talking about its in first or second you let off the gas still in gear then you hit the gas again and you feel the jerk from "slack" it gets progressively better as the gears get higher

ok i found out what it was, when i swapped rear end gears i guess the crush sleeve wasn't tightened down or to tight and the driveshaft has alot of play. there is alittle leaking from the yoke and from the diff cover. when i put it in reverse there is sometimes gear grind. yes this does sound bad but im wondering if i just take it apart replace the crush sleeve will everything be ok. i have to drive it 400+ miles in the next few days so that kinda sucks but i have been driving it like this for awhile.... i know it seems kind stupid of me. so how bad is this?
