street legal

I'm in the fun hating state of california and i was wondering where can i find out if the parts i want are street legal? I've seen parts on year one that they say are illegal but then I go to the manufacturers website and they say they are legal.

yeah most anything for your car is illegal in cali. best bet is to buy performance parts. but dont touch the exhaust or EGR or dont make the car crazy low.....or move and you can do what ever you want...lol

Yeah, really. If I would ask someone around here about a smog check, they wouldn't even know what the heck it meant.

I'm not quite sure on that one. I don't think you could.

Nope, not as long as your car meets the standards for the state it's licensed and inspeced (? on Ky inspections) you're good to go. Just don't go with an expired inspection or in case of PA emmissions sticker, that could be big trouble....

All you have to look for is a CARB (Cali Air Resources Board) exemption number. Most of the popular, name brand parts have gone through the process of getting one. Just make sure you get the sticker with the CARB number on it and stick it to your firewall where the smog guy (or police officer....) can see it.

Also, your car doesn't have to be fully legal to pass smog. I passed smog without a muffler, eventhough vehicle code says you MUST have one. Illegal mods outside of those encompassed by smog law will NOT fail your car for smog. Also, depending on where you live in Cali, the smog laws are different. I live up North, and my county only requires smog on transfer of title. Which is awesome, as I can smog it once, and never have to deal with it agian (unless I sell the car).

Another thing, certain mods aren't going to get noticed, depending on the smog place you take it to. Porting/polishing come to mind, as does oversize valves and boring/stroking. They may not be legal, but as long as you can pass the sniffer, you're fine. Depending on your smog guy, you might even be able to get away with aftermarket heads so long as you keep the factory valve covers.

Really? I thought the laws would be the same since it's the Cali DMV. Yeah, the guy i took it to was gonna fail me because my oil cap was cracked. He just wanted some extra cash but I used it to buy a new one which i was going to do anyway . I went to the C.A.R.B. website and I found a list of all the parts that are street legal here, I think it would make a geat sticky if it already isn't one.

I didn't notice your location before, but you're really screwed down in LA. Not only do you have to do biannual smog, don't you have to do it on the rollers, and do the Smog II checks, as well (or is smog II the rollers)?

All the more reason to make damn sure you get 50 state legal parts!

Thats why you get chummy with a smog tech and get a hot smog for 100-300 bucks. Then you can do anything you want. BTW Cali sucks =T I live in the Bay Area and all the smog stations out here are smog nazis. They denied me for just a stock K&N filter on my 5.0. Now I just pay someone and mod away. Moving is a good decision, it will be cheaper cost of living and less of a p.i.t.a. I'm going to move as soon as my lady GF is done with school. Some states have it good.......
