check engine light

everything seems to be fine with the car. It idles and drives perfect, all the fluid levels are perfect, the exhaust it perfect, and all of a sudden the check engine light came on. The only known problem is an idler pulley but it hasn't had any effect (i'm replacing it most likely tomorrow or the next day). Does anybody know what this can be? And is there a way to check for what the problem is?

Thanks

I thought most OBD I systems had a way to put the computer into "tell me what the f***ing problem is" mode, and they'd flash the code to you (i.e. 5 blinks, pause, 7 blinks for a code 57). Not sure how to do that with your '93, though I'm sure someone else will.

Oh, if it's a '98, then you just hook up an OBDII scanner. Harbor Freight has a decent one for under $100.

so i got it diagnosed at advanced auto and it turned up as the o2 sensors throwing the code. Considering there's 4 and they cost a ton of money, is there any way to pinpoint which one it is?

Yeah, the code should tell you which one it is.

Pretty much any legitimate problem should throw multiple codes. My suggestion would be to clear the code, and see how long it takes to come back. A code has to be tripped 3 times in 3 different times of the car running before it will trigger the CEL; you may have an intermittent error that's occuring and not actually a bad 02 sensor.

I have a similar issue with my cobra - Twice in ~3 years of ownership, I've gotten a CEL that's linked to the IMRC plates. But it's always just one code, and if there's actually a problem, 2 or 3 should be triggered. I clear the code, and it goes away for at least a year.

yea it hasn't come back all day. The i figure i can get at least 20k more mile on the stock o2's considering the car has 78k on it.

I just feel like a rookie with all this obd2 stuff because i'm used to my 93cobra haha

Heh, it's not that bad. A decent scanner goes a LONG way, though. I wouldn't go so far as to get a tuner for a '98, though most tuners do OBDII scanning, as there's not much to tune in those ECUs (you can bump up the rev limiter.... and that's it).
