Engine PAIN!!!!

Well.. I have a have a 1998 GT Mustang convertible automatic with about little over 63000 miles on it and my engine is mess up so I took to a mechanic and he told me I have three dead cylinders. he said I am only getting only about 10lbs of compression where he said I suppose to get about 30. So I have to rebuild my motor well my question is how much would it cost to do that? also should I rebuild back to stock or add some mods to it? I am mad and confused to what to do if anyone can give me some advice I would really appreciate it.

Get a cheap junkyard PI engine..

you can get one for 600 bucks.. get 60 more horsepower.. and you can install it yourself, or take it somewhere for far less than rebuilding it.

Yeah I was thinking of a pi swap too. but should i keep my old motor and rebuild it slowly with more power and etc. cause it only has 63k on it so its a good motor to work on.

i say go looking for a decent motor that isnt going to cost you an arm and a leg. Keep yours now and use that to learn. Take it apart, figure out how things work, and how to fix it. And while in that learning process you can go ahead and buy some parts to build it up if you have the money to spare.

Yes. You will not get anything for it anyway, so your better off keeping it and putting it on a stand. Do like raven said and tear it down yourself. You will learn alot.

i picked up a PI engine from a guy on craigslist, changed the timing set in front, and it was fine, the swap cost me a grand total of 1700 including labor, for a 40k engine. If i were you i'd def hit up some junkyards, but make sure you get something with some sort of gaurantee (hence the changing the timing kit on mine, dumb move... live n learn). anyhow, the whole compression being 30 and 10 doesnt make any sense to me... cuz compression in my new engine i recall was like 160 or 180... haha so it should be much higher than 30?

Yeah I thought those numbers were low too. I first took to the dealership and they first told me I had low compression on 3 5 6 cylinder; but nothing more and trying to sell me a motor for 3k screw that!!! so I took it to another mechanic and he told me the same thing I thought those numbers when the car idle.lol I don’t know I am looking for a new motor now most junkyard here don’t have any or the car is total wreck so motor is worthless. Ohh well thanks everyone input it really put in the right direction.

dumb question: my old tranny will work on the new swap?

yes old tranny will work and if you wanted truck freight i could send you a perfectly good shortblock from my car when i pull the 4.6 to go 5.4l ;> runs perfectly now i just want more ummm....speed... haha will be ready to ship in hopefully 2 weeks from now its a 97 block i just bought the car 3 months ago and everytime i do an oil change the oil still seams to come out the same color as it went in so im thinking it was very well taken care of or is newer than the car theres been nothing but a CAI and exhaust done to the car through its life so its never ran a power adder. thing is...it would ship from south dakota ... but would be crank/rods/pistons/5.4l oil pan ;> need to reuse urs cause i need the 4.6l one for my 5.4. unless your want the whole damn thing minus valve covers..but well if u want it pm me ill shoot you a price it will be low compared to junkyard just tell me what all youed like on the motor;> also i could get you set of PI cams/springs/retainers if you could find a set of bare heads to put valves in
