Difference between running rich/lean

I was wondering if someone could explain the difference between running lean or rich. I have a 96 GT that smells like gas constantly, especially when i get on the gas. With the windows up you would never know. As soon as i crack a window open you could smell the gas.
I dont have any leaks in the engine bay but it smells bad in the trunk area. But i dont see any leaks there either.
Any help would be great!

Are you running cats? You will get a gassy smell if you are running an o/r pipe due to unburned hydrocarbons. Even if you have the stock midpipe in, the cats can burn out and stop functioning. Have you checked to ensure you your don't have a leak in any of the fuel lines? I believe the fuel filter is mounted near the fuel tank. I know mine is. The fuel line runs just in front of the pumpkin and I had to reposition it line slightly because due to my car being lowered, I was starting to pinch the line with the differential girdle. You may want to check the fuel filter and line. Report back what you find.

Thanks for the reply. Actually i have an o/r h-pipe installed. I havent checked underneath the car yet, just checked the engine area. I will do that as soon as i get home because my car is lowered so i might have the same problem you had.
Somebody suggested a fuel breather type line on top of the gas tank but wanted to get some more feedback on this.

the gas tank seal on the rear where the filler neck goes into the side of the tank often leaks. you will see a leak near youre pass side tailpipe. it drys up quick too. Usually comes most when the tank is at full.
