Port non p.i. Intake runners to match p.i. Intake

Would yall suggest this. I can do the porting myself so it wouldnt cost anything but i dont wanna go screwing a set of heads up if this cant be done. Do the non p.i. Heads have enough material on them to do it. Has any of you done it?

There is one way to find out. If you do it successfully you may have just made yourself rich.

Ive never heard of it being done but if all ford did was take non p.i. Heads and modify them then with some time and work i should be able to do it. But i ve never had a chance to look at p.i. Heads up close to tell any differences. I dont like the idea of using those adapters. All they do is smooth the airflow between the p.i. Intake and non p.i. Head.

There is not enough material to match them. By doing so you would probably end up losing power in the long run by causing turbulence in the ports and disrupting the airflow. Ford did not just modify the NPI heads they were a total change in design. Bolt on the PI intake and be done. You cannot just take a grinder to heads and make power, there is a lot of science to it. Most that try to port their own heads make them worse than they were when they started hacking on them.

The mismatch is not enough to cause a restriction to matter. You don't need to use the adapters you can bolt it on and use a little rtv without any issues. Believe it or not NASCAR engine builders have used a mismatch on port alignments on restrictor plate engines to increase power.

No you can't do it and it wouldn't make sense to try; It's the runner design that is what looses the 15hp not the ports.

Ok cool that answers it for me. Is there anything you guys would suggest to squeeze a little power out of the 97 heads

No. You can have them ported to flow the same numbers as a ported PI head but then you're still stuck with the limited NPI intake. Your best bet is a PI engine swap, 4v swap or the PI H/C/I swap.

See this morning a guy at the ford dealership told me he heard of a couple guys doing it. He said just to make sure i keep the shape the same. And i remember a while back at the race track a guys intake cracked and i was watching him take it off to fix it and his intake runners where massive. Now he said they where npi heads but i never asked if they where aftermarket.

if the ports looked like PI, then you would use a PI Manifold right?
