Not sure what the worm gears crap was about. Sounds like a transmission thing to me.
For your differential there are a few things you need to know. There is traction lock, true limited slip and locking. Locking is an open diff with teeth that during turns pull out so that the car acts like a normal open diff. 1 wheel spinning and all. Then on the straight, it locks and they move the same no matter what. Traction lock is similar, but closer to a limited slip. It kind of locks in, but it does slip in turns. This is what comes in the GT's stock. It is decent and you can get a new one from frpp for a couple hundred bucks. The next step up is a true limited slip. like an auburn diff. This has a true limited slip in it. It has a set of springs that push a clutch between the middle of the diff and the 2 axles. The numbers 2.5, 1.5, 3.5 are just the amount of force of the springs. So, how hard it is for the axles to turn out of synch. Generally the more power you have the bigger the number you want, but this might lead to more wear during turns. The other important part is that true limited slips use an additive in the oil that adds a friction component. This makes the clutches in the diff grab better. You have to add it every time you change the fluids.

So the two that you want to look at are the traction lock and the true Limited Slip. The big difference is going to be the money you want to spend. I personally would like to have a better diff than the traction lock I bought. But I have not had any issues with it either. I went through frpp.com for mine. They had a pretty fair price.
