Hood latch problems

I hit a deer and lost the hood off my 97 GT, so I ordered a Cobra style hood the other day. While I had what was left of my old hood on there, the safety latch worked fine. Now on my new hood the latch gap is too narrow to grab the hood. Did the cobra hood require a different latch? Or is my hood not perfect? Or am i just not understanding how the latch works?

Maybe file down the opening a little bit and see if that helps. Have you tried to see how the latch hook fits with it off the car? If it fits good to the hood with thelatch removed then it could just be an alignment problem.

I had an issue with my cervinis cobra r hood. Tried to leave my car, twice... Expensive. I'm running hood pins now. But cervinis told me you're supposed to knock the dowel pins out on the latch and it's supposed to give you the adjustment necessary to hold another hood.

Yeah I tried fitting it. We're talking about removing about 1/8" of metal...

I would try all the adjustments first. I have afco hood pins, they were inexpensive, seem to be a decent product.

A good file can remove 1/8" of metal fairly easily. You don't have to do the entire thing, just the area that is going to be meeting up.
