New guy to Mustangs, a few questions

Hey all,
I have recenetly been working on and driving an SRT-4 Neon and am thinking of moving into a 96 Mustang GT. What are the power limitations to the driveline (i.e what horsepower level do most drivelines fail at?)?

What is the best tuning software available, I have seen Diablosport, SCT, and AEM EMS. I have used the AEM on my SRT-4 so I am a little familiar with it, but more interested in something a little less time consuming.

Our motors are good till 400hp. The rods will blow at 400. I think the pistons and crank are good till 600 and the block till 900 (correct me if im wrong)

Diablo and SCT are the only real tuners i would use. I personally use SCT and love it. I have a dyno tune though.

^ what about sniper?

you also have to be careful with the rear ends if you hook up with like 400 hp (cant remember the exact hp they break at). usually only people who run drag radials or slicks have this problem where they snap their axles. in that case they just upgrade to 31 spline.

You may want to consider a 99-04 gt instead. They come stock with about 50 more hp.

Okay, I've heard of the 96-98 blocks holding upwards of 1000 horse. Seasoned blocks (some with some miles on them) are better, no clue why, they just are. The internals are pretty strong, about 400 horse is right, but like previously stated, if you put that power to the ground, your 28 spline axles are gonna be toast...That is unless you are runnin an auto with a stall and even then your not totally safe. I personally use special forces tuning software with my 98gt and have been very satisfied. extremely easy to use and you write your own tunes, so theres no paying somebody hundreds of dollars to do it. plus theyre tech support is THE SHIT. Just sell your neon and buy a 2003 cobra? youll get made fun of a lot less too

haha this guy ^ and the Cobra's!

Honestly man going from an SRT-4 to a n/a NPI Mustang you wont be to happy. It will feel slow. Not doggin the NPI but like stated above a 99-04 GT will be a better car for you.

As for power levels and such...every car is different. But Boercker said a seasoned block is better then a fresh one. Its use to the heat cycles and such. The blocks can hold 1000hp plus.(iron and like stated above) I am not sure if the internals in the 96-98 are different then the 99-04 but people say the internals can do 450rwhp. But anymore than that is risky. The 400 number is a save number.

For drivetrain the t45 tranny(5 speed) is a stout tranny but jusrt needs shift forks to be replaced and your good. The t3650(01 and up) are good but the cynros are weak and more pricey to replace then shift forks.

The rears are "ok" with the 28 spline. But a high launch and drag radials you will fuck the rear up after awhile or first time. Slicks are easy on the rear end and drivetrain b/c of the wrinkle zone.

If your go with a 96 a head swap, manifold, and cams(PI heads from 99 to 04) and you will be very happy! 2v mustangs need boost or spray or both to really shine. a N/A 281 2v just doesn't get enough air N/A to make power. For the money that is. You can pick a 96-98 Cobra up for cheap tho if you want a 4v. But a 2v is cheaper to build.

To sum up a Mustang is nicer and MORE FUN to drive then a SRT4(never drove one but FWD sucks!) And the mods are endless!

i think 96-98 is better just because there are so many 99-04s, i see twice as many as i do of 96-98, but id still rather have a new edge for the performance

With a 96-98 you get the mix of classic old style (no traction controll ALL you) driving. With new edge...yes you get a little more power but wooo you won the originality award
