Cold air intake
Exhaust
Throttle body and plenium.
Gears

Do those and you'll have a good base to work with.

I would also highly suggest a PI intake swap, or do the full PI swap.

With an auto, 4:10's will make rpm's much higher on the interstate= bad gas mileage.

Good seat of the pants feeling though!.. if you want gas and something that will lay you in the seat go w/ 3:73's.

The other best first mods would be
- Cold Air intake
- Throttle body and Plenum
- Off Road X or H pipe- really
- Mufflers

Basically anything that will open your NPI's restricted air flow up.

4.10s for sure first thing you do!.. They made my 96 gt auto more fun..

Who cares about gas, why buy a v8 mustang if your going to be worried about gas?.. plus they cant be much worse then the 3.73s.. I didnt notice a big difference on my car...

gears would be a good choice or you could look into a pi swap.

In that order.

A supercharger is a pretty good first modification.
