engine stalls

hey im new to this site so im hoping i can get some help. i just bought a 96 mustang GT and i was for some stupid reason changing the battery terminals. after i was done i took it out for a rip and it starts up fine everytime but as soon as i put it in reverse it stalls out, and when i put it in drive it either stalls or idles at like 300 RPM. it was perfectly fine and never did tht before i changed the terminals so i changed them back to the stock ones and it still did it???, any help or ideas to try would be great.
thanks

Change the fuel filter. Depending on the previous owner, it's probably never been done and it sounds like a fuel deliver problem that just came to a head the same time you were working on the battery.

Also double check the connections on the battery cables too though. If they are not on there tight, it'll studder.

Not sure how long you've owned it, but you may want to go ahead and take care of all the normal maintinence items like plug wires, plugs, trany oil, radiator coolant, etc. No telling if all that stuff was replaced/changed when it was supposed to be done.

yeah also check the IAC.... When you removed the terminals the PCM lost its learned values. So now its going to act a little different but doing that shouldnt havent allowed it to stall out.

any ideas lol

If you already changed the fuel filter, I'd say that sounds like the O2s. Once you're out of warm up mode, if the O2s are not switching fast enough or properly, you can get them maxing out rich and lean signals and that will play havvoc with the way your car runs for sure.

If you need to replace them, make sure you get Ford parts. Randy in the Ford Parts thread on modulardepot.com can hook you up with about the lowest prices I've found. Same for all sensetive electronics like the IAC...only use Ford Parts.

Hope you get it worked out!

Not sure where you're going with this, but yes some parts are made by another company for Ford. The point is, when they make them for Ford, they are made to spec required by Ford. When they make them for Auto Zone or your local car parts dealer, they do not follow the identical spec Ford requires. Do some research on it and you'll see what I mean.

is it an automatic transmission? sounds like a possible converter issue with stalling out when the engine is warm.

if not, it is an air/fuel problem.
