Tach Issues??? Need Help???

I have a 97 Gt 5 speed and ever since i purchased the car the tach has been off in its own little world. The only time i get an accurate reading is when i am above 5000 RPM's, otherwise it just kinda floats around and does what it wants. Is this a pretty common thing for mustangs to do or is the dash bad or a wire loose or what? I have always owned diesels or carburated trucks never a fuel injected Ford, always been Chevy. Any help would be appreciated cause I really like to know what RPM I am at. Thanks

does it have a shift light that wired into the tach wire. if not check the wires that go to the pcm and at the back of the cluster and make sure they are making a good connection

No, that is not normal. Check the connector in the back. Make sure it's clean and properly seated in the cluster. The cluster is pretty easy to remove.

no it doesnt have an aftermarket tach or shift light but everything else works in the dash, how difficult is it to remove the dash and take a look at the connector?

thankyou for that, it looks easy enough and i might see if i can get those led's anywhere around town and do that in the dash while im there. that looks alot cleaner and if im already that far into the dash i might aswell do it to. I appreciate the help. hopefully all it is is that the connector is loose, if not maybe find another dash that works.
