Assembling Bare PI Heads
I Got a set of bare PI heads. I have all the valves springs and valve guides. I was curious if there was a good write up on assempling PI heads. Or is that something ill want to have a shop do?
All the parts are brand new however i plan to put better springs in them as ill be running a decent sized cam. All this will be going on my 97 Long Block. Notched pistons to go along for clearance. Any suggestions? Thanks!!

I would take it to a shop ,
My machine shop charges very little to asemble heads , I think with 2valve head I can get 5 angle valve job and assembled for 150ish .

here ya go. please excuse the mess, i did this on my porting table with a head that is waiting for some modifications. i just did the one valve, but you should get the idea.
tools needed: sping compressor/otc tool (what i used here), small screw driver with a magnetic tip (comes in handy), assembly grease/oil, and hammer (not pictured). ![]() clean all your parts and have set out ready to install. put little bit of grease on the valve stem and tip (some people just use motor oil, but grease is ideal). ![]() ![]() slide the valve thru the guide, and install valve seal. give small push to seat the seal. ![]() take valve spring, put in place (stock springs have a top and a bottom. they will only go on one way), put spring retainer on top of it, have locks within reach and compress the spring. if you are doing this on a table with a small spring compressor or the otc tool like i used, i reccommend putting a rag in the cumbustion chamber of the valve you are working on. if using a pneumatic compressor or equivilent, then it of course it doesnt matter. you might have to use small screw driver to help persuade keepers into place, magnetic tip is to help retrieve keepers if you drop them. ![]() ![]() ![]()

now take the hammer and give the tip of valve couple light taps. this ensures the locks are installed correctly and secure. now you install lash adjuster (be sure cam lobe is up if cam is installed), apply small amount of grease on tip of lash adjuster and vavle stem, and i reccommend apply light coat of oil on cam lobe and roller of the follower as well.
![]() if you put rag in combustin chamber, you will need to pull it out as for the next step requires the valve to open some. be sure cam lobe is up, compress the spring (might have to push down on valve stem for valve to go down at same time), and slide rocker arm in. once rocker arm is in, you are done ![]() ![]() you can do more than just one valve at a time, i usually do both/all the vlaves for that cylinder at same time when i doing it on table. i took that one valve assembly apart to do this for ya, hope it helps. feel free to ask questions if something you dont understand.

i can with that write up if thats the one you want. i will be doing mine soon after i get done with the flow bench and any additional porting i might have to do. i can do a nice set of heads instead of the dirty one i have there.
