Lowering my car

Ok the wife told me I can't spend what I want on lowering my car until after Christmas. But I'm impatient and want it now.lol
I've decided to cut my springs.I know how much I want to lower it but I don't have a clue on how much of the coil to cut off.
Here's how much
front 1.5"
rear 1.0"
How much of the coils do I need to cut off?Do I need to cut it from the top or bottom?
I'm pretty sure this has been discussed before some where here on the forums but haven't found it.
Thanks for your help.
