1996 mustang 4.6 ticking sound


there is a ticking sound coming from the lower front part of my motor it gose away at about 2500 rpms and its not super loud just something that bugs me. it dont stop if the ac is turned on so idk what it is any ideas would be great thanks ill try to get a vedio

mustang :: mustangbad001.mp4 video by 1badmaxx - Photobucket sounds almost like its the water pump to me and there is alittle play in it with the belt off

I watched your video, I hope its not more serious than your diagnosis. You could try the mechanic's stethoscope: use a 1/4-inch vacuum hose, put one end to your ear and probe the suspect components with the other end. 1) usually good with pin pointing sounds 2) this is dangerous and being careless can get you hurt - use extreme caution and I am not liable .

I have the exact same problem I posted it on here last week. Well to make a long story short my #5 piston has 0 compression looks like I am buying a new motor. Here's the link to mine you can see if you think it sounds similar, my ticking started a bit lower than yours but after a few weeks it became louder.

well if its a bearing then im out 1800 bucks for a car i cant aford to fix right now. i guess if it dose turn out to be that ill build the bottem end but i really just wanted to keep it a stock bottem end and turbo kit

hmm ive never heard of our timing chains having problems/ needing to be replaced

wow really and how much do you read about mustang or have you even looked for that issue i have and seem alot do have timing issues

Could also be the chain tensioner. It could be collapsed.

i read a whole thread here once a couple months ago where a guy was asking if he should replace his timing chain since he was already there and everyone said no. they had 150+ to 200+ and never replaced theirs or had any problems

Ouch man! What ever it is it doesnt sound good! zdkel has the best idea. That will also work with a long scewdriver or a long extension

if it is coming from the lower part of your engine then it can be the oil pump it is located right behind the harmonic balencer.
