Easiest way to drain fuel from '98 GT Coupe

Have full tank of fuel and fuel pump went south. Tried to do the hose down the tank trick but cannot even hit fuel. Any easy way to drain tank? This vehicle is in my enclosed garage. Thanks...

there is an anti siohon device at the end of the filler neck. just get under there, and drop the tank. have some one there to help you slid it off you once its dropped. its a little heavy and awkward, but easily doable.

Does the pump work at all or is it totally dead? Reason I ask is, if it still works somewhat, you can pull off the fuel line at the filter, (direct it to a bucket or something), send some voltage to the pump, and empty the tank that way.

if the fuel pump went bad, you're going to have to drop the tank anyways. Just get some help, loosen the tank, take out the filler neck, and tip the tank that way into a bucket. Or just drop it straight down. You can replace the fuel pump with the tank full. You will just need help to balance it when you are lowering and putting it back up.

Also, I used a floor jack with a 4ft 2x4 under the tank for added support so I only had to balance it, not hold the weight

Any one ever cut a window in the spare tire well? If so, I would be willing to cut a window with a small grinder and replace the fuel pump. I would need pics of the exact location and pattern to cut. If this is do-able. I would be willing to cut and fiberglass the cut panel back into place. Thanks....

How about a pic of the exact location of the fuel pump on top of the tank?

The fuel pump is inside the fuel tank in the center. When you drop the tank you'll be able to see where it is looking down on top of the fuel tank. Also, I would recommend purchasing a new filler neck grommet since your existing one will most likely tear during removal. They are 12.99 from latemodelrestoration.com

Oh yeah, I once thought that my fuel pump had died however it turned out to be the Passive Anti Theft System.

Just incase you havent done so already,

Have you checked to see if the inertia switch inside the trunk on the left side under the paneling has popped up? If it has push it back down and try firing the stang up.

When you turn the key to the "On" position without cranking it can you hear the fuel pump priming at all?

Have you verified that the pump is getting the voltage it needs to operate right at the connector that connects to the fuel pump outside of the tank?

If you can't get fuel out from the pump, then when you remove the filler neck from the tank put your siphone hose through the hole in the side of the tank and drain it that way.If your tank is full, you're going to need three, 5 gallon buckets.

i pull full tanks out alone in 10 minutes not a big deal. DO NOT CUT THE SPARE WELL! your tank is directly underneath is ony 1/8in below if that.

Willy its not as uncommon as you think to do that. Most camaro guys do that because of were there fuel tank is located. In my buddies camaro we would of had to drop the rear axle again to even get access to the fuel tank

But as Sweet said in our cars theres like 0 space between the trunk and the tank

A lot of passenger cars have a window/door already in the car under the rear seat. So all you have to do is remove the rear seat and bam, your right there. I have replaced a couple fuel pumps this way, makes life much easier. Im not saying the idea is a bad one, but doing it to a mustang is a bad idea.
