TECH! - Help with head swap - Noisy engine...

I got the PI Swap done. The car is complete again. I fired it up for the first time and the thing is noisy as hell. It sounds either like a manifold is bad or the top of the engine isn't getting any oil and the lifters are screaming. Has anyone ran into this problem? I put an oil gauge and it was reading 90 psi. I took off the FRPP shorty headers I had on there and went back to stock (I broke the passenger side) while putting the engine back together. I used new manifold gaskets. I soaked the lifters and rockers in oil for a couple hours each. I didn't bleed them out before soaking them. Does anyone have any ideas? Has anyone had this problem? Please help!!!

PS - I took a video of it running for the first time. I'll post it up tonight when I get home.

Yeah, I swapped PI heads, PI cams, and a PI intake manifold. Did you just run it the way it was? It sounds so bad. I'm afraid to run it how it sounds. I'm also having a problem idling. The RPMs stick real bad and it has a hard time idling. The car was running fine before the work and I've just cleaned the IAC about a month ago. I'm hoping it's all related. Also, my battery can't hold a charge. My damn alternator crapped out on me! This swap sucks! I underestimated how much work it was...

im debating whether or not i want to do this swap myself. I've been triying to get my hand on a SOHC with 60k on it. I was just going to convert the old block to PI one but now i think i might just swap out the entire motor. What do guys think?

Sounds like you have a vacuum leak.....A P.I swap is not easy nor hard it just takes a little time. You have to double and tripple check everything just to be sure you didn't over look something minor.

I just finished my PI swap this morning and my driver side lifters are noisy as hell. It seems to be going away with time. I drove it and it runs and pulls like hell. Should I be worried? Or will it go away like I think it will. It seems to be getting better with time. any advice would be great.

honestly i will be doing my swap as soon as i get my heads back from being p&p and get my custom cams in also. Have any of you had a tune. With that swap you should def do a tune to be safe. I dont know if it will help the noise but it wll def help the motor and pos the idle problem.

THE SWAP IS NOT WORTH IT. Unless you're going Nitrous of course. Nitrous loves the higher 10.6:1 compression. For anyone that's doing this in the future, the full engine swap is almost cheaper AND better for future mods like a S/C. I went from 120k engine to a 30k engine for $800 plus fluids. And it was 100% easier than swaping head and degree cams...which leads me to your issue...

Are you sure you degreed the cams correctly? If not, you could be hearing the pistons hitting the valves.

I disagree, it was worth it to me. I would have did ported heads and cams but i didnt have the money and i paid $250 for the heads, cams, and intake and it was probably the best 250 i have spent on my car.

What's your HP numbers after the swap and what's your future goals for the car? If you only have 250 into parts and you're not going supercharged I can see why you say that.

that's most likely what the noise is he's hearing...
and about the swap not being worth it... what planet are u from... 95% of these guys got the swap done (inlcuding myself) fir under a grand. using stock components u gain 40rwhp... for the amount of power u gain for the money spent it's more then worth it.

if u use aftermarket cams and get P&P heads that 40rwhp gain is going to turn into 75rwhp..... for about a thousand more.

I think what u were trying to say is that it's safer and easier to just do a motor swap.

I dont know the numbers for the car. As for the goal for the car, if i can get the money anytime soon i would like to supercharge it and maybe someday even build the engine. I dont really have a solid plan for the car so the headswap was very worth it for me.
