Engine Dies While Driving
Hi - i am new to this site, hoping you guys can help me. I own a 96 Cobra. I live in MN - when the outside air temp is around 60 the car runs fine. When it gets to 70 and above, for example if I down shift from 5 to 4, periodocally the car will die. There's not rhyme or reason to when it dies. We though it may be the iac and put in a new one. That did help stabalize the idle, but it is still dying.
The car has a KB supercharger and we noticed it remained hot for a long time after the car had been running. It was suggested that the fuel may be getting to hot and that is why it is dying. An intercooler was suggested. Any thoughts on that? Also suggested was to check the wiring to the maf. It looks like it was extended and is bent. Would that make it die? The codes it is throwing are: P1390, P0605, P1127 Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! thanks! Erica |

P1390 Octane Adjust out of Self-Test Range
P0605 Internal Control Module Read Only Memory (ROM) Error P1127 Heated Oxygen Sensor Heater not on During KOER Test I've never seen any of those codes thrown before, so it's not a normal problem people encounter. I'm sure one of our Ford tech's can provide some insight. |

is it running hot at all? i mean how is your engine bay temp. when these cars overheat they turn off. im not sure about the codes but running a blower and warm weather could be raising the temp too much. mine died on and off a bunch of times when my coolant was real low last summer, damn heater core.

Thanks for the input...
All the mods to my car were done when I bought it so I'm not 100% sure of how things were done. I do know the KB boost a pump is not hooked up and it has 42 lb injectors. I was lookin' on the KB web site and it says the supercharger I have does not need an intercooler. It also says larger injectors heat the fuel and are not recommended. We are thinking the fuel and engine bay are getting to hot and that is why it is dying. I have very little mechanical know how, so this is my best guess - please correct me! What would happen if I were to put the stock injectors back in and hook up the boost a pump? Would it make a difference in the temp/engine dying? Thoughts?

42# injectors need that boost a pump, why is it not hooked up? might be causing you to run lean if the injectors arent getting enough fuel. i dont know much about the boost a pump though. hook that up, dont buy an intercooler cause you dont need it unless your cranking the boost. do you have a new fmu with that kenne bell?

Hmm. the first 2 codes do indeed sound like something from the flash youre running from the KB. A bent wire isnt going to cause any damage. If it were cut then it could. And it would either die/run rough ( keep in mind we are talking about the MAF ) But wouldnt have anytihng to do with the air intake sensor, because the ealier Mustangs ( ie: 1996 ) had a IAT sensor not in the MAF.
Also the 1996 Mustang Cobras had alot of common problems with overheating. But since you have aftermarket S/C.... im not very familur with them. So as far as the S/C having anytihng to do with it.... it might. We are all not even sure about what kinda KB or even how much boost youre running...... heck... youre not even sure.
