Just bought myself a '98 GT

It's a beautiful automatic in pretty much perfect condition, but everything on the car is stock. I'd like to change that, but I'd also rather not go broke doing so. It'd also be nice if I could do it myself.

I just want to crank out as much HP in the rear wheel as humanly possible. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the welcome. I've browsed around through the forums and I saw that.

I'm just looking for advice on what to hit first. Intake? Exhaust?

Budget's relatively low, but I wouldn't mind dropping another $1k into it to start.

Exhaust over intake? I've read that the stock intake manifolds on the GTs kill a number of potential horses.

your not going to pick up much on just an intake..

exhaust is the better option.

if i were you i would look into a PI swap.

it's a good way to pick up about 40 HP

I like the sound of that. How much would that typically run?

1500 bucks! Or you could go all out and get some aftermarket heads, intake and cams and be around 325 RWHP!

Interesting. Thanks for the advice. I'm thinking I'll save up and do a PI swap.

Until then, any uber-cheap mods that would just make the car run faster/better?

Excellent. I will certainly hit that first, then. What sort of ratio would be best? And how much am I going to kill my gas mileage?

First thing you have to do is drive it bone stock hard, then pull out the intake silencer, add a K&N filter and cut a big hole in the top of the air box. I did that on my 3rd day in my 96 GT after seeing it in one of the other forums, Holy shit what a difference that made. I'll do the CAI after the PI engine swap, But the next thing is an Hpipe for now.

it all starts with just minor upgrades like pipes, intakes, wheels and tires. and thenn all of a sudden you have a full blown race car, and an empty wallet. its very easy to do this. lol

by the way, what made you get an auto?

Yes it is very addicting! I bought my car in Sept. and I now have around 4K in it including labor. This is a really easy way to get into debt! AND GET THE 4.10s YOU WILL REGRET IT IF YOU DONT!!!!

Well the 4.10s will give you more noticeable torque at lower rpms. Gear ratios just multiply torque. The 4.10s will also allow your engine to run up to redline quicker. The 3.73s and the 4.10s are both great gears, but if you plan on taking it to the track at all the 4.10s will give you a better ET because you will be shifting to 4th gear before the traps and you will be in your powerband more than if you have 3.73s where you will be at nearly redline at the traps in 3rd gear!
