Second gear in my car is um.....wierd.

Ok, so after having my 96GTConvertible for all of 45 days I've concluded that it sucks. In terms of mustangs, not mustangs in general suck. Car had one owner and proof that it was well maintained up until the point of sale. Now i've owned several mustang over the years and as soon as I got the car home she just felt odd. My first conclusion is that she was underpowered. I had an 03 GT, 95GT and 88lx5.0 that ran low 13's. My neighbor and good friend has a 98GT hard top and before he modified it he had way more pull in 2nd gear then i did. Now that he's put n h pipe and cat back with computer flash it's like I'm racing a 99-up. I've got one friend who can drive...he's run circles around a c5 vette in a stock wrx sti. I like to rev out first gear, shift around 46-49 hundred rpms as i leave my apartment, and every time if my foot isn't slammed on the clutch second grinds. Same thing happens when my wheelman buddy drives my car.

Any words of wisdom?

It could be grinding because your syncros are out for 2nd gear

t5 and t45 transmissions are pretty well known for grinding, especially in third, which is what mine always does. never really heard of anyone havin any problems with second though

yeah, im aware of the 10 horsepower increase, and the fact that i have an extra 200 lbs due to the drop top. The more and more i think about it i think that maybe it's just the extra weight that holds me back. Last night we pulled out of our parking lot at the same time with his gf driving his car with him in shotgun, and me driving mine with my gf next to me, and i seemed to be able to ride his a$$ without any trouble. Last time we went at it he was solo and I had my gf with me.

I got the same problem shifting into 2nd around 6200rpm. It grinds like crazy; was told that it is the synchros.

6200 RPMS? I think our limiters are at 6125RPM! Also unless you have different heads and cams and intake you wont be making power up there in that RPM! 5800 is about where a stock 4.6 2V kicks out of the power!

So it's definitely my clutch that was causing the problem with second gear. When i got the car she had no floor mats so a friend lent me rubber ones he used for winter until i could get a set. I removed the drivers side mat because and for about a week or so the problem seemed to have gone away. But surely enough, I've noticed the the catch point in signifigantley higher from a when i bout the car (already kinda high) and now i again have to slam my foot on the ground for second. either this weekend or next i'm going to have the clutch replaced.

My 96 cobra was grinding pretty bad going into second as well. About a week after i bought it, I broke the shift fork going from first to second. So, if its not the clutch.. look inside.
