Spec Stage 1 Clutch Chatter
Yesterday I installed a Spec Stage 1 Clutch Kit in my 98 GT. My problem is that it chatters like crazy! When I take off in 1st gear it's the worst, but it does it going into 2nd and even 3rd as well.
I've read that sometimes Spec Clutches are known for a bit of chatter, but I thought that I'd be safe with a Stage 1. Does anyone know if this is just a matter of breaking it in, or is it just the way they are? |

did you do a new flywheel or reserface your old one? If you did ethier of those then I am pretty sure it will get much better with wear!

Well... the short answer is...
I used the stock flywheel which I had to attempt to resurface myself. The longer version of the story is this... I ordered a new flywheel from "A parts store that will remain nameless" so that I wouldn't have to deal with resurfacing my old one. I installed this new flywheel only to find out it was the wrong one when my car wouldn't start. The flywheel was too small (I'm thinking it was for a V6). This was of course determined after everything was already installed. So... I had to rip it all out, and try to do my best to resurface the stock flywheel and install it. I hope you're right and it gets much better!!! |

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that the flywheel is what is causing the chatter. I just bought a Ford Racing Nodular flywheel and I'm going to ditch the "do-it-yourself resurface" one for that. Hopefully that fixes it up (and hopefully it hasn't messed up the Spec clutch as all!).

Break in period is 500 miles, where you may have some chatter. It is always recommended to change the flywheel when you are replacing the clutch.

that's helpful
![]() Spec Stage 1 is known for it's chatter. Just replace the flywheel, recheck everything and all should be good. |
