REALLY bad idle and lost power

Hi all,

I'm new and would appreciate any help. I own a 96 GT 4.6 2v. The idle started getting really bad a couple weeks ago-bad to the point where I'm at a stop light and the car is just shaking. Also, my throttle response fluctuates, i.e. I shift from first to second and I have to slam my accelerator to the floor to get the car to move faster, or I just let the car go at it's own pace and it starts to go faster anyway from 3-5 rpm.

Anyway, I suspect it's the fuel pressure regulator and an o2 sensor but I would like some advice before I buy them. My car is releasing a 1152 code, missing sensor code (negative reading-no id on whether it's an upstream or downstream sensor) and is running really rich.

Any thoughts?

Its probably your front o2 sensors, they will make your car run like crap if there bad.

Thanks for the response.

Yeah, I had a feeling it was a sensor issue. Is there a way to find out which of the front is bad? I don't want to replace both if only one is bad.

Also, my buddy tested the fuel pressure regulator and the reading was 20 pounds of pressure (I think the pressure level should be around 50, right?). And wouldn't a bad regulator cause my car to run rich? A code came up saying my car was running rich.

sometimes a bad o2 censors will trip codes cuz they sending faulty readings and it will say your car is running rich, clean your iac and your maf, and den change the front 2 o2 censors, let us know how it goes.

I would also throw on a set of plugs. Never hurts make shure u go with OE not the crap that the parts store people always try to sell you with multiple prongs and diamond studded for $10 a plug. These cars like good old cheap plugs until your boosted

Clean car man. Did you do the clone work yourself? The only thing I see wrong from the outside ( other than the window scoops ) is the S 281 lettering on the front left of the bumper. That should not be there.

It's a very nice looking car either way though. Welcome to the forums.

Hey all,

Thanks again for the advice and sorry for the late response. It turned out to be a bad o2 sensor (passenger side). The new sensor is going in tomorrow so I'm excited about it. Hopefully my baby will be back to normal.

Thanks for the compliment! I'm a female by the way . Yes, I've done all the work myself. Invested over $15,000 into her and I'm still not done. I'm adding some side skirts on Monday (still have the oem GT ones on).

Yeah, I know the lettering on the left side isn't oem Saleen but I like it that way. I want a Saleen Mustang but I don't want an "every-day" looking Saleen (if that makes any sense). People always compliment my car saying that they haven't seen a Saleen like mine before (I wonder why? lol). Thanks for the welcome also. This is a very cool board.

As mentioned, I would really bet on that IAC, as far as your car...... your car is beautiful, the only one ive seen that can pull off the quarter scoops on our body style, the only thing I would change would be to black housing headlights, but either way, im jealoush

Do you have some door filler pads for the side skirts?

Hey, I live in Quartz Hill (Southern Cali). Thanks. I'm glad everything worked out too! It's good to have my beast back. For awhile it felt as though I was driving a 4 cylinder Honda lol .

Hey, I actually looked into the iac but my buddy said that it would only be an issue if my car was idling high (which it wasn't). Thanks for the compliment! I really like your suggestion! I just may look into getting those headlights.

I do actually (thanks to reading some of your past replies because I didn't know about door fillers-Stage 3 calls them door caps/panels). The side skirts and caps are going on Monday-which I'm stoked about! The next thing on the to-do list is either upgrading to an X pipe (I have an H pipe with dual flowmasters) or getting some aftermarket headers...decisions, decisions.

Is that red Saleen your's? If so, it's awesome! What kind of mods do you have for it?

Yes, I bought it in 2004 and it was completely Saleen stock. I have way too many mods. It would take me about 30 minutes to list them all. You can check them out in my garage if you want.

OP-- nice car. What wheels do you have on it now? I cant see your avatar and I def need new wheels for my car. The original (or saleen original) Salen Lemans rims I hate and the chrome is peeling inside. SO I need some.

Mayo: There are some shops in PA that can rechrome your wheels. Try a google search and they should come up.
