97 GT Starting Issue

The last few times I've driven my car, it will "click" the first time I turn the key and start up normal the second time I turn the key. The "click" is the same sound you get when you have a dead battery, but it is just clicks once. Any ideas? Starter or starter solenoid on the way out?

Check to see if the battery is dead

Then try having someone tap the starter with a hammer while you turn the key

^ +1. Start with the simple things first. Hopefully its not the starter, they are a B to change!

Start at battery terminals making sure they are clean and tight. Then work your way towards the starter.

I need to buy a new cable. It has the clamp-on style terminal now, which I don't trust. I cleaned and tightened them the first time this happened. The battery is fine. Like I said, single click first try, starts normal second turn of the key.

Thanks for the quick responses.

It happened on my 98 Lincoln, turned out to be a weak solenoid. I replaced the whole starter. hey with 270,000 mi on the original, I figured it had earned a new vs solenoid only. They're right it was a b to change. heres a link 4.6 is a 4.6...
