I believe the Romeo engines (03-04) had the bolt on cam gears while all the Windsor type (99-03) had the pressed on gears (I think there was some overlap in Romeo/windsor types in 03).

Also with the PI head swap and PI cams do you need a tune afterwards or would it be fine?

if you are running stock pi cams and heads you won't require a tune.... hell, even with aftermarket parts you can get away with no tune. stock parts it won't be so ruff, but with the aftermarket stuff it will. and you won't be utilizing your parts to there full potential. you could prolly squeeze 5-10hp out of a stock car and 20 or so out of a modded one

well I took delivery on used PI cams, and I got that itch. So what y'all are saying is (on a stock 96) bolt them in and go, right? Well and swapping in the PI intake of course.

The two tools I think you are referring to are : cam tension retention tool you can get from Anderson motorsports and a ford valve spring tool (got mine from amazon).

Special tool?

Would love to get the part number for that tool to hold the timing chain in place if you get a chance.

I didn't read all replies...sorry. But I saw about the cam gears.

96-98 GTs were bolt on gears (romeo)
99/00 GT were press on gears, truck motors (windsor)
mid-01-04 GTs were bolt on as well.

Basically Windsor motors came in trucks were all pressed on gears. Mustang cars got the truck motors from 99/00, hence the pressed on gears...If you have a romeo motor. Pressed on gears.

Check out AFM. I used their tool and it worked GREAT. Two tips though.
1. DONT USE WITH AFTERMARKET CAMS as they should be properly degreed
2. Follow the instructions. Turn the crank to "suck" the tool in, its not a pry bar

You may be surprised. Most, if not all of the gearheads I hang out with are well aware of the term and what it means, they simply lack the knowledge to perform such an operation.

I couldn't agree more. All of my friends are young as well but they all know what degreeing is. The process and tools though is what keeps them from doing it.

I also have a 98 Gt Convertible, is yours auto or manual? If auto, have you had any transmission work done on it? Shift kit? Rebuild? Mine is beginning to show some signs of wear and I was just wondering what others had experienced in this arena.
