HIGH Speed fan Dosent Turn On.

Im having problems with the cooling system in my 96 stang. after close examination i found out that my high speed fan dosent turn on at all, which is wierd. also when i turn on my a/c my low speed fan turns on instaed of the high speed; no current is going through the high speed wire. any possible solutions to this and has anyone experienced this same problem?

New manifold, new temp sensors, new fan motor, new thermostat, and new water pump.
Please Help!!!

I figuredid ask myquestion in this thread because it basically goes along with OP question. DOes the 98 mustang gt have a 2 speed fan? Should fan run all the time when AC is on? Mine cycles. AC works great while constantly moving. Not so good while stopped idleing. I think cause cooling fan cycles and doesnt stay on. Any advice?

I think its a 2 speed for your 98, it is on my 96.

+1 on check the relay. You may also want to make sure your cond coil is not full of road debris, bugs and other stuff that may stop air flow.

and another test: pull one of the 2 temp connectors (driver side if I remember) and the the fan will run in high speed with engine on.

Mine had the same problem as zdkel mentioned check the coolant sensors on the intake. One is for the gauge and one is for the fan. Although unplugging mine did not make the fan turn on. The sensor decreases in resistance the warmer it gets, so unplugging it would make the computer think the engine is cold.

You can check to see if it is the problem by measuring the impedance with an ohm meter. I believe at temp is around the 30 ohm mark. Mine when it was bad had in the megaohm area (pretty much no connection(

hope this helps

Did some checking today. Unplugging the sensor by the tstat does make the fan run all the time. There are only to wires at the fan. Thinking this means a one speed? Further up the harness though i find a cut off wire. Did fan used to be a 3 speed. The cut wire does not have power with or without ac on. See pics attached. Everything seems ok, but fan does not stay running with ac on. Ive never had a car that the fan did not stay on with ac on.

If I recall correctly. There are three wires.... one is a ground, one is a low speed, and one is a high speed. There are three prongs on the fan too. Middle is low speed, and outer is high speed and ground.

I would be checking the relay, because there should be two speeds and it should kick on with the a/c.

You could just wire it up on a switch then... Three selection switch. Off low and high. Then you have manual control. I did that for a while.

My 98 gt definitly has a 2 speed fan. Which does not stay running while the AC is on. I ran a jumper to the fan today with the ac on and it cools GREAT with fan running. What im going to do is wire a relay inline with the fan so when the ac compressor kicks on it will triiger the relay to keep the fan running. Ill also wire a diode in line to keep the compressor from coming on when the fan is triggered for just cooling. Anyone know why this wont work? alot cheaper then a new relay that controls all this at 190.00. Unless theres other reasons the fans not staying on???

I replaced the relay in the control module for the fan. Fan still does not stay running with the ac on. Yes ac is staying on.
What else could cause this?

There is indeed 3 wires on the connector, a ground, hi speed, and low speed, as previously stated. The high speed of the fan ONLY kicks on when the air condition is turned on that the motor is hot at a certain temp (can't remember exactly). If the temp climbs to almost the top of the range on the gauge then I would start looking into a relay or a wirring issue.

My 98 definitely only has 2 wires and only a 2 wire connector. I'm guessing maybe po switched it. So the fan should not always run with ac?

Honestly not sure never really took notice to it, but i would imagine the fan would kick on once it warms up not just all the time with the AC but I could be wrong. I delelted me AC and when I installed my flex a lite flan for clearance issues I just tapped off the high speed wire and connected the low to the positive and the ground to the ground on the flex-a-lite fan and its been good for years now.
