Don't mess with "shift kits." Google J mod and you will find the cheapest and easiest way to improve the shifting of a 4R70W.

i wouldnt just tell him to "not mess with shift kits" thats pretty biased IMO.

OP, some people say go jmod. some say shift kits. there is no real world info for comparison as far as ive seen.
personally ive decided to go with a whole new valve body and the bm ratchet shifter

before I did the 3650 swap I installed a B&M kit. Got it from summitt. It was pretty easy to install and it did a nice job especially on 1-2 shifts. The job is a little time consuming mainly because of it being a beeotch to get all the traces of the old gasket off of both sides and between the valve body. The gasket is razor thin and it seemed like it got really brittle or something so it was coming off in little pieces and on this job cleanliness is of utmost importance. The whole job took me about 4 hrs. The directions were very easy to follow. I thought about doing the j mod but with the B&M kit they give you the template that shows you exactly where to enlarge/drill and they supply you with the different size drill bits as well. There is 2 or 3 big springs a couple of small ones and a little ball and of coures all the gaskets you need.

IMHO there is a bigger margin for error doing the J MOD.

When I did mine I installed a trans cooler at the same time.

I ran the FAIRBANKS shift kit, IMO the nicest shift kit on the market and much much better then the j-mod. If your going to spend the time to drop the pan for a j-mod id just do it right and replace the springs valves etc etc that comes with the kit.

TransGo makes a good shift kit, I understand.

PO had tranny rebuilt in my 98 GT. I have the paper work and I talked to the shop. They said they put a shift kit in. I love it shifts nice and firm. Squawked 1-2 before the 275/40s. Can also feel the 2-1 downshift when stopping.

my buddy had a 96 Tbird and the trans was perfect, then he installed a shift kit ( i dont remember the name) and within 6 months his trans was starting to slip.Even when he took it to his guy who is a ford nut he told him to do the Jmod also and not that shift kit but he didnt listen. And now after 6 months only he started losing his trans. My freind also wasnt the easiest on his car but i have a trans that has 262,000 on it and i beat the sh*t out of it and never had a problem with it.I dont wanna side track this thread though. But from all ive read and through word of mouth, Jmod is the way togo, you can even order the entire kit for it offline for pretty cheap..

I have a set of BBK's on my car now. We made them work when put the auto in but its far from optimal. I picked up a set of Hooker's that I had coated by Jet Hot to replace them. I know the Hooker/Flowtech style headers fit just fine with an auto. All the big dollar headers are suppose to work well with the autos as well.

If you would be interested in the Hookers I have let me know. Now that I am going a different route I am planning to use a set of Kooks.
