should i get rid of the turndowns?
the exhaust on my 96 gt is stock manifolds, 3" OR H-pipe, single chamber flowmasters with 3" turndowns just before the rear end. the car sounds pretty good except at low rpms(sounds like a truck), it sucks for cab noise, if i cut the turndowns off will it make it sound better? will it help quiet the ride?

you would need to run tips out the back to get rid of some of the drone youre getting from it being dumped but it wont get rid of all of it. itll still sound like a truck also.

Unless you have something pretty radical, which I don't think you do since you are running stock manifolds, you are probably hurting performance with that 3" exhaust.

I just put dumps on mine i like it...Ive had both and like both but they both have there pros and cons...
One thing you will learn in time is no matter what exhaust you run or muffler if you run dumps you will have more drone inside the car and if you run tailpipes it will exit the rear of the car and make the inside noise minimal. If you actually have a 3" exhaust id be surprised because ive seen many claim 3" when it was only a 2.5", what mufflers are you running?

Daily driven, long tubes with x and flow masters dumps, it's loud but I'm not driving a Lexus.
Dumps make attractive ladies underwear fall off. |

Yeah I have flowmaster's with turndowns and I am going to go back with tail pipes. Probably LM1's.

On sn95s, I don't agree. They just kinda hang out there and look out of place in my opinion.

what ive noticed is if the tips are big, like 3.5in tips, they look out of place. i think a nice set of either 2.5in or 3in tips look good when positioned correctly.

To get rid of the noise you need to go back to full length tailpipes.
I like the old svo or Roush side exhaust best on the sn95 cars but it is so hard to find and all those extra bends and that big u turn in the muffler have GOT to hurt performance.

dumps will always look better with a stock sn95 rear bumper imho, but i couldnt stand how loud it was in the car. best compromise was the 2.5" flowmaster ss tips. just barely above stock size, not flashy chrome, slash cut to blend in more with the rear bumper (i hate straight cut tips - might as well have a pair of coffee cans hanging out the back of your car)
and to answer the op's question - yes it will stop sounding like a truck with tailpipes.

previous owner said it was 3", it could easily be 2.5" exhaust but i'm not positive, definately an h-pipe though, i don't really want to put tailpipes on it, it just wouldn't be right for my car. would cutting the turndowns off decrease drone at all? if it will i'm gonna go for it

the reason there is so much drone is cause of where it ends. cutting off the turn downs wont change a whole lot. gotta put tail pipes on it to lessen the drone.

It will more than likely get louder and you will get alot more exhaust smell in your car.
Think about the end of the pipe as the end of a trumpet, it is where the sound comes out and the direction it points is the direction the sound goes.

Turndowns look 1000x better than pipes on the 96-98's. Makes the back end alot cleaner. And as for the noise it's a mustang with exhaust; You were expecting something quiet? Pipes all the way back will be somewhat quieter but again at the end of the day its a mustang with exhaust, its supposed to be loud!
