Question

How to improve 1/4 mile time?

I have taken my 1996 mustang gt to the strip twice. Once when it was rather hot out and once when it was around 60 degrees. When it was hot out the best i ran was a 15.9 and when it was cooler i ran a 15.7, but both of these times are way slower than what i should be getting. Is there any tips on how to control the tire spin when first launching on the track?

why do you say it should be faster? what all mods are done to it.? if its pretty much stock with just a few bolton it makes sense where your at with your times..You may get better throttle response and all with some upgrades but they wont shed anytime off your 0-60 or 1/4 mile...best bet is to start buying PI swap parts..

Get 4.10's and sticky tires. I did that and I went from a 15.2 to a 14.7. I also got subframe connectors that helped out a lot too.

thats not really alot of money or work especially if he did the work himself. Thats not even close to what i spent in money and hours when i did my pi swap for some little horsepower upgrade. and in 1/4 mile a half a second is alot. alot of people scream horray over .2 seconds
hey tatertot99. How much of an improvement (not time wise but handling) did the sbc do. I just got my maximum motorsports flsfc in and cant wait to install

re gearing an axle is a lot of work because and can be easily messed up and have to be done over and by jumping to 4.10 you lose ALOT of gas mileage.

For one if you are still running the stock 3.27s rear gear thats gonna kill you every time, the first mod to be done on a 94-04 mustang is gears, either 4.10s or 4.30s in my opinion. When it comes down to cutting a good 60 foot your looking at suspension and tires, and obvioulsy a good set of springs and shocks/struts to compliment the setup. I would get a good drag radial and a good rear suspension setup. When choosing a 4 link keep in mind that your going to expereince increased NVH with almost all suspension mods. Stay away from control arms that have a poly ends on both sides, they will cause suspension bind and added stress to the weak factory torque boxes. I would recommend a good lower control arm with at least one spherical end which will improve traction greatly and also allow the axle to still have some articulation. As far as uppers I would pick up a good set of adjustables to you can set an optimum pinion angle which will also greatly improve your 60 foot for the track. If you wanna go all out I would recommend my setup all day long, Team Z double adjustable lowers with a spherical end on the torque box side with a solid steel collar on the axle side, and the team z relocated upper kit which relocates the uppers for an optimal instant center and they are also double adjustable with spherical ends on both sides, if you opt with an all solid end setup like this you can adjust your pinion angle to -2 degrees and get ready to rip up the track.

As far as gas mileage goes, I'm currently running a 4.10 rear gear on on centrifically supercharged 4v making 420rwhp and honestly the decrease in gas mileage isn't that bad at all. Do not fear the gear.

i planned on going to a 3.73 and i currently have 2.73. and i know the gasmileage will deacrease a lot for the highway because i did it in my jeep went from 3.73 to 4.10 and lost 5 mpg highway. city stayed the same because you just shift into a higher gear but when your already in 5th gear you dont have another gear so your only choice is to cruise at 70mph turning 3k RPM.

With my 4.10 setup I cruise at 70mph on the highway turning roughly 2200-2300 rpms.

thats what i did, granted mines a cougar not a stang but i rebuilt the whole front steering and suspenion and WOWm it haled handling alot, you would never guess whats worn or broke untill you start digging, now when i go fast around corners my front end is nice and tight and i feel the rear sway a bit, plus when i full give it off the line my brother said my rear tires hop around odd, im guessing its from crappy suspension so it would have to improve my 0-60 by getting those wheels to stay planted not hoping around..

Yea time to dig into that rear suspension, the combination of wheel hop an sticky tires usually will end up in disaster eventually.

The previous owner put the exhaust on and some add-ons but i was only 16 at the time and knew nothing about cars lol. I think im gonna give him a call and find out what he all did to it. Im sure it still has the stock gears and i was thinking about addingg some 3.73 gears, but im only getting 20 mpg as is...and my mpg has been decreasing for some reason over the past year from 25 to 20. I have no idea what the reason is for that. My time varied from 15.9 on a hot day, to 15.7 on a cooler day, and it isn't consistent at all which frustrates me. The previous owner told me that it should be doing around 14.9 but also im 6'7 and weigh 300 lbs...so im sure that plays a roll in it. thanks for all the input tho!

and also, i found a CAI that adds 10 hp but i hear they are a waste of money...and i was wondering if a short throw does help or not. I'm still learning and i dont know a lot but i know enough.

AirLift airbags, P/N AIR-60776 on Summit. Installing those, replacing any worn control arm/knuckle bushings, and a good set of tires should cure your wheelhop. I'm pushing 478rwhp/390rwtq currently through the setup in the pic below without any wheelhop.

When (if ever) were the O2's last replaced? It sounds like it's about time to change them.

I haven't replaced them and i doubt the previous owner did. What does that usually run and is it an easy replace or would i have to pay for labor?
