Rebuild Motor

I want to rebuild my motor, but dont know how much it will cost to do it. i want to take the motor out myself and take it to the machine shop, but some one said they will charge 2000 dollars to rebuild it. then i heard if you take the motor out and disassemble the motor yourself it will be more cheaper, is this true or not and how much would they charge?

I would caution looking for an affordable rebuild, b/c the 4.6 engines have pretty exact size parts and you could run in to workmanship problems with the lowest rebuild cost. I think for the $2000 dollar range, there are several engines you could afford from later model ford cars. The 4.6 is in many many cars and you could look to do a less involves engine swap - just my two cents.

Getting the block magna fluxed and bored .020+ cost around $600. If you drop out the overbore it will obviously be cheaper. Tearing it down is actually pretty simple. Reassembly isn't bad either until you get to timing and degreeing cams but if your going with stock components it isn't bad at all.

+1 to this. Taking it out and apart is simple. send the block out and do most the head work yourself. Thats what i did when i did my pi swap. I used the ford cam tool and had access to a parts tank and everything so i could. timing can get tricky but if you just follow the directions its a piece of cake. If you end up doing it i can post a link to a good write up on timing.

I think with the motor out that would be the best time to do it.

if your pulling the motor now. Spend the money and get the headers. TRUST ME. I am wishing badly i had the money to spend on headers whiles it was out. Now im basically screwed.

depends on what you find for prices on things.
to give you some ideas I spent the following
used pi heads - 280
pi intake - 80
gaskets and head changing kit - around 200
plus i bought all new plugs and wires and thermostat and such. It begins to add up but as long as your doing it all yourself i say its definitely worth it.
When I did my pi swap/rebuild/upgrade I spent about 1500 on everything doing everything myself
