98 GT looking for New Life

I own a 98 GT and i am looking to put a little life into it. I have a issue though. Supposedly my mechanic told me i have a compression leak in chamber 6.

he said it could be a seal or worst and that i would have to rebuild the engine. I talked to some friends and they said if i have a compresion leak i can forget about trying to put any type of Supercharger on there.

Any way i am looking for options. My budget isnt the best on the planet, so i cant go and buy a crate motor for 14k or anything like that. Anyway looking for options. Can any one help me?

Beautiful car dude, definately wouldn't give up on it. First thing, definately do a rebuild, and while your at it swap to PI heads and intake for another 60-70 hp (what came factory on 99-04 GT's) and do full exhaust (longtubes, midpip, catback - that should net another 40hp or so). That should take care of 95% of the rice burners. That should cost you less than $5k easily with parts and labor.

Alternatively, you could go to a junkyard and spend $500 on a used 99-04 GT engine if you can find one, spend $500 to put it in, and save some $$. Lots of ways to make power.

You could get a used supercharger kit for around $2k or $3,500 for a new kit and spank 99% of the ricers. Lots of options.

Need more info. I assume he did a compression test. Did he give you the numbers for all cylinders? Did he do a leak down test? Did he check the cooling system? Its not that hard to figure out. If he doesn't have that information for you I would go somewhere else. How does the car run?

Nice looking ride. I would do a rebuild with the PI swap and exhaust as was mentioned. You will fall in love with it all over again. Good luck.

How many miles are on your engine and does it have a misfire at any point? There can be a lot of different things that it could be causing the leak. You should get the information from your mechanic as stated above. No, do not put a s/c on it if you have a compression leak. And it depends on what the problem is on whether I would rebuild it or not. If it's something small like a bent valve from a piece of carbon or something and you still have a small amount of mileage for that year, then I think I wouldn't rebuild the whole engine. I would just make sure I get the heads cleaned or better off get a set of PI heads and clean the cylinders out. It's all up to you. But you won't have much trouble with ricers if you throw a s/c on it when you get everything set.

Yeah, I love the black/chrome look and the body kit is subtle but good looking. The aesthetics are right on, which is my motivation to keep my car and build it to last me through college.

Yea i didnt get a leakdown test or anything to find out exactly the issue. And thank you all the guys who like the look of the stang. The car still drives decent i think, no miss fire, but i do have to add oil, so i assume that means it burning up oil. I guess that mean its something like a seal at least.

I spoke to this shop in longisland they mention somethign about building a shortblock with this and that, but cat was talking 10k. I don't think im ready for that lol.

Any way so you guys saying get another machanic to figure out exactly what it is befor i commit to a rebuild right? I will ask about that leakdown test, thanks darrell. And he said it the porblem was with #6.

Another option the guy gave me was a factory rebuilt engin from ford for 1.5k but he said i would get stock HP 225, which would feel better than what ever i am pushing now.

Another quick question as i try to decide what to do. Can some one explain to me whats a shortblock compared to a Long block. And lets say i was to rebuild my motor to produce some power. Would fixing my current issue be better or would buying a shortblock and what ever be better?

Just trying to get more info befor i decide on what i can do.

I love mustangs, but im pritty nooby to engine talk, but its time for me to step up my pony.
