4.10 Gear Question...with a twist...

So, after reading everywhere, I have finally decided to get me some 4.10 gears for my 98 GT. I decided it is not really gonna be that much change for fuel economy and since the car is not a daily driver anymore, I am cool with that. But while doing research at americanmuscle.com I read this:

"For drag applications, a 4.10 is the way to go. If you install a 4.10 on a vehicle that is used for a lot of highway driving, you will find that you are unable to reach highway speeds (65 and higher) because of the gearing, and you will also notice a lot more fuel consumption than normal."

What the heck? It can't reach 65mph or higher? That sounds so wrong, it doesn't make any sense, and I don't really want to believe it, but I do drive a lot on the highway at speeds averaging 84mph. So, I want to make sure before I buy. What do you people make of the above statement? BS? Anyone with 4.10 gears?

Load of BS, plenty of guys on here have 4.10 gears and do 75 on the highway, only at 75 youll be around 3k rpms vs stock being around 2.3k rpms. Id have to if that was true cuz thats insane to have a top speed of 65 with 4.10s lol.

I dunno what tranny you have but most people prefer 3.73's for manuals and 4.10's or 4.30's for automatic drag apps.

i have 4.10s, trust me, youll go faster than 65 lol. Im not proud of it (well i kind of am) but i know first hand that a 98 cobra with 4.10s will go faster than the speedometers highest number (its 160). But Lovestang is right, it will run around 3 k at highway speed and I dont care what ANYONE says, 4.10s WILL noticeably affect your fuel mileage. But they are quite fun.

IMRC's being open at 3k wrecks my MPGs. Also, 4v, different tune, more air, more fuel.

4V's are more efficient, so you should actually be getting a little better than a 2V.

Well everyone on here is gonna get different gas mileage for there gear setup due to the airflow they have with their intake/exhaust parts, also spark plugs, fuel filters and tire inflation can affect it. I know after i put on new spark plugs, off road x pipe, a 75mm TB/plenum and CAI my gas mileage got wayyyy better than when i first had the car. Like 50-75+ more miles to a full tank due to the better air flow and better spark from the plugs and new wires, my old plugs were so old the gap was around .80 lol

But to the OP let us know how u like the 4.10s im also in the process of getting my PI intake on my NPI heads.

volumetric efficiency does not translate into fuel efficiency. but like lovestang said, everyones is gonna be different.

All volumetric efficiency is the engines ability to breathe.

Yeah, I'll keep you guys updated on my mod. Do you think a Bama tune would take care of the speedometer problem the 4.10s will cause?

A mod motor is built to and is suprizingly efficient at 3000 rpms. Don't worry about the revs. Your motor will have a larger torque multiple so it will take less power to get to speed and maintain it. As long as your not reving the shit out of it cold and always let the oil get to temp kod motors will last forever. Even at high rpms. I have a pi intake and romeo heads if your interested. A 70 hp bump would turn that pony into a stallion

That's because you have a '03. The OP has a '98. He'll need a speedo gear or speedcal to correct his speedo.
