Engine codes and ECU problems?

I am throwing these codes and need some help, I looked these up on your helpful codes lookup pages on this site (thanks guys):

P0605 - PCM internal ROM problem
Do I have to replace my engine control unit? or is there another fix here or fuse to look at or what? I have my cobra at a very responsible/competent mechanic shop and he has already checked all the usual suspects I am sure - but thought I would ask anyway. He thinks I have to replace the pcm/ecu unit - the main engine control unit that lives in the pass kick panel - does this sound right? Can I buy a used ecu and just swap them out? he told me that the ford manual says something about a "learning" deal here of any updates that will have been downloaded onto my car's ecu that any used one would not have or something? Any help here would be greatly appreciated.
Also I have a code P1414 - air pump high code; this is due to the fact that the air system has been removed from my cobra - will this throw a code that will keep me from passing computer tested inspection?? Is there an eliminator solution here/tuning solution to pass inspection/smog without re-installing the air system that is....
Thanks guys - stevet

you might check just plugging the pump back in and see if the code goes away if it does tuck it in there once a year for inspection and then yank it back out when you get home.

the p0605 usually tells us that there is a tuning chip installed or I have seen this dtc when the battery was disconnected and the test for the first time afterwards. As for the air pump dtc, I know of no solution for this one but like quickblu said, just plug it in, wire tie it into place and then remove it afterwards

Not a bad idea, however I no longer have the pump - it got tossed back in the day....during my P-1SC install/headers install, etc.... Though the pigtail is there and I could maybe fake it out with a resistor across pins if I knew which ones and so on......
Thanks - stevet

There was a SC's chip plugged onto the backside in the port made for this - for the last 2 yrs. Now the SC'er system is gone and have gone back to NA - so the chip is now removed. Battery ahs been disconnected for an engine pull, re-install, now trying to get the car running again and it is just not running worth crap. So my mechanic pulled what codes he could find off his computer - it read a P0605 and the manual he has from ford tech says this indicates a bad PCM/ECU ??

if i read correctly you had removed the smog stuff when you did the headers and s/c, but used a chip from the s/c mfg to clear the code, now you took the supercharger off but still have the long tubes, therefor cannot use the secondary air injection anymore so you will throw a code, unless you get it turned off agian by a reflash or chip. i wonder if something happend to the pcm board when you removed the chip? needless to say without the smog stuff you wont pass the sniffing but probably the visual who really looks up in your fenderwells for smog pumps anyways?

I have fms shorty headers but the front bungs are crimped closed - and yeah guess I did something bad to the pcm when last I removed the chip and actually the air pump was on the car and hooked up last time I had the chip that was in there burned, so not sure about how it was not throwing any codes before or at least no idiot lights. I think I will try buying a used pump and hooking it back up to the pig tail - worth a try.
Anyone on using a used PCM from another cobra??
Thanks - stevet
