just had to throw my 2 cents in: was told multiple times by my buddy with an 01 cobra that my old 96 gt with o/r h and flowmasters sounded better than his catted x, borla stinger setup. i had to agree, due to the fact that i like the "muscle car" tone more. his car did sound amazing too though. just not as classic rumbly as my 2v. ive heard 4v's with the same o/r h and flowmasters and its just not the same. im a firm believer that the 2v is one of the best sounding mustang motors - especially with an o/r h and flowmaster original 40's. can always tell a 2v from a block or two away.

3v's have the axleback muffler setup. kills the tone imho. and im sure the vct doesnt do much to help its exhaust tone either. still love the way some of them sound though - theyre just not as old school as id like.

4v's have a bit of a "trumpet" or "bubbly" noise at idle that im not such a huge fan of. and with the new ti-vct, honestly i believe the new coyote 5.0's are probably the least musclecar sounding of the whole bunch. sick motor - sounds nothing like an old 5.0 though. which brings my next point: nothing will match the sound of a classic 5.0 pushrod. my old f150 had one and i had more compliments on that truck from random strangers with stock everything and a flowmaster 40 catback than i did on my mustang. and i owned the mustang twice as long.

cliff notes:
2v tone sounds best to my ears
4v are "bubbly' but very loud
3v axleback mufflers and vct ruin exhaust tone
pushrod sounds the best of all

there was also a 2v around my area a few years ago. it had MAC LT's, and the rest was bassani. very mean sounding car. it was wicked quick too, packing a 250hp shot of the go-juice
i cant bring myself to vote in this thread because i firmly believe they all CAN sound great, its just a matter of picking all the right parts to work with each other
Yeah i agree with that. Ill upload a sound clip when i finally upload the video. Ill take a video once the falcon comes out of storage, its by far the nicest sounding car ive ever heard. Super loppy and gurgly.

couldnt have said it better myself. its hard to beat a 5.0 pushrod motor with headers/off-road H and flowmasters IMO

i totally agree 2 valve motors sound the best but lets face it who cares about the sound we want em to go fast so its more fit for function but my uncle stands by his 289 k motors he use to run in his mustang and lots of people around my town said it was a corvette killer so it dont matter bout the size boys its how there built. I wasted a lot of money on my old 3.9 windsor v6 and didn't even see 260hp outta it and if its one thing i learned about these mustang after owning three of them and driving many many more its not to go cheap with them build them right the first time so now if i go to good ole cj pony parts ill spend the extra and get a decent quality part but once again i agree with the 2v they sound good with the h pipe and flow master set up i love the dohc motors but the parts are seeming to turn out to be a lil more money and yea they have a stronger top end but they also cost almost twice as much as a gt with a 2v love em all though as long as its a pony car its a good car in my mind any year any model mustang fan in and out

I'd have to say 2 or 4 valve sound Waaaaaay better than the 3v's...

The difference from the 2valves IMO is they tend to have a little more of a higher pitched tone to them? if that makes sense... where as the 4v have more of a deeper sound and tone under W.O.T. of course the kind of exhaust you install will have ultimately the largest deciding factor in tone, burbliness and ect,... but truthfully as much as I love a 2v with an x pipe and chambered muffler.... I wish when I floored the pedal I heard a supercharged 4v respond lol.... Either way if my 2v's exhaust note regardless of power was the only exhaust note I would ever hear of any car for the rest of my life I wouldn't be pissed...

pushrod sounds the best of all

It’s hard to beat the sound of some 40-Series or Super 44s on a pushrod 5.0 engine. Newer engines are completely different architecture and are computer controlled which also changes the sound of the exhaust.

Even though we like the old pushrod engines, we still like the sound of the Axle-Backs on the new Mustangs. But we’re a little biased.

Some 3v's can sound really horrible with exhaust.

I'll be honest on that one, i love the sounds of the hushpowers, but american thunders are right behind it.

flowmann - ill have to admit I'm not a huge fan of the flowmaster hush power or american thunder classics on these new 5.0's. i know its mostly the new engine layout/position of the cats/rear mounted mufflers/ti-vct/etc. but the flowmaster "tone" thats so famous with the old school 2v's, 4v's and 5.0's just doesn't harmonize well with the exotic sound of the new coyotes.

that is one sweet stang though
