well from what leaned about drifting its a combination of hand brake to displace the weight off your back tires and use the brakes and gas peddled to control the drift a power slide can be done by any driver all u need to do is dump the clutch or in my case with the auto push the peddle to the floor. Any REAR WHEEL drive car can be drifted vaugh gitten jr. does very well with the monster mustang if u like mustang drifting go on you tube and look up vaughn gitten jr. he makes this sport look good

There's a few threads about this.

Short answer is yes, but you're much, much better off starting with an S197.

Has anyone actually participated in drifting in an actual closed course? What brakes do you have of you actually have done it and not speaking from "well what I've heard" crap.

You have to learn how to kick your clutch, literally. As stated about a s197 would be a better choice to start with.

Thanks for speaking from experience. I was planning to go turbo which would require me to replace my k member, but that's til next year if the military doesnt decide to move me.

tell you this much, put my cougar in drive 1 with OD off and anycorner become s driftable..its all how hard you acc and turn the wheel..dont go doing it on stock parts, your tie rods and everything else will be shot very quick..how do i know? lol hmmm someone liked corners for a bit...i know i have a coug but the same things apply.
and i tried to drift my buddies manual mustang and its ALOT harder in manual i say, with auto you just mash, steer and counter steer..its easy in my car lol but my car has shit traction..

Drifting really isn't that hard on your brakes. You tap them to get some weight transfer, but other than that you really only use them when you screw up. If you start getting serious, then you'll probably want to go to a hydraulic e-brake, but until then stock brakes are perfectly fine.

I've said this same thing a few times, looks like I'm typing it out again. There are three major problems you need to address to really successfully drift a '79-'04 Mustang:
1) Chassis flex
2) Rear axle location
3) Steering angle

1) pretty much just requires SFCs, though stich-welding your seams will do a lot. A stiffer chassis is much more responsive as your inputs get to the suspension, rather than being absorbed into the chassis.

2) By location I don't mean where it is, I mean the rear suspension's ability to keep the axle located properly. Lots of threads on how crappy the stock 4-link is for anything but drag racing, but specifically for this context, what you're most concerned with is the amount of lateral movement inherent in the stock suspension. Without mods, the rear axle can float back and forth about an inch either way (two inches total movement). Quickest solution is a panhard bar; theoretically you could also just swap your UCAs for some spherically-bushed aftermarket units.

3) The further you can get your wheels turned, the more angle you can hold and more importantly, the more you can recover from. Stock, Mustangs have *crap* for max steering angle.. hell, my '90 has rack limiters in it from the factory! To get more angle, you have to do two things: create more room for the wheel to travel before it hits the A-arm, and change the steering geometry such that you can take advantage of that space. At the very least you're looking at aftermarket tubular control arms, which almost always require a coil-over conversion.

The only other thing I'd add is that you don't want the car tuned for oversteer! This seems to be a common misconception when people start out. A car that's set up for oversteer won't hold a balanced drift; you'll get sideways and the rear end will just keep coming, causing you to spin out. You want the car to be set up as neutral as you can, and considering that Mustangs understeer from the factory, that really means upping your front grip.

Or... for about the same price as all those mods will cost, you can pick up a single-cam S13, cut the springs, weld the diff, and have a better car to drift with.

I just use my right foot.

More throttle makes the back end go farther. Less throttle makes it come back.
All youve gotta do is steer.

456rwtq helps though

best advice for drifting get sexy chick in driver's seat, find open parking lot, full throttle and let the clutch out and tell the BITCH TO HOLD THE FUCK ON.
