best 245/40/18 tire

getting new tires soon, what tires would you guys recommend?

looking for either a

245/40/18 or 255/40/18

and is a 40 profile in the back be too much? should have clearance right?

like a 275/40/18? or would 275/35/18? I have all 18x9 btw

Alright, mister

How many times have you heard me ask "What kind of driving do you do and what are your needs in grip?"

Well, give us the hook up so we can hook you up

A 40 series is pretty tall, for an 18" tire of that width. Your looking at nearly 2" larger diameter over an OEM size. That will likely spell some rubbing, so would recommend you stick with a 35 series. Why do you want to run that tall a tire?

Jazzer

Knew you'd be in here Jaz...

I have a 40 profile up front already, and there is no rubbing at all. Just looking to get some new ones and dont know what to get. Usually I get used for dirt cheap so whatever they have, but I'm getting some money for new ones....

In the back I have a 30 profile, and even lowered, it looks like really thin, so I was wondering if 35 or 40 would be better in the back.

Looking for just an all around tire, grippy but not really really grippy, mainly dry condition and aggressive sometimes but definitely not all the time. lol does this help any?

I put a set of Hero Milanza HZ1's on my car and i love them. No complaints at all with them. They grab great, ride great, take corners good.

Thats what they look like.
Also this is before i had spacers on the back wheels.

i think 35's are the best sidewall..they dont add more height like 40's and dont have off-road tire look like those bigger sizes....and 30's arent baddddd but there a little stiff..i had 275/295 30's on my first set of 18's...then went to a more staggered look and went 255/315 35's and was much happier...tires...for street i think my favorites have to be hankooks...just personal preferance..ive used bfg, goodyear, sumitomo, falken, kuhmo, riken and nitto's...the ventus v12 evo's by far best all around ive used...

Off-the-line or lateral grip, silly? Do you have ABS in your car? Seems to me, that the pre-New Edge rides did not have ABS, but am not positive. What size tire do you run in back currently and what is your drop?

Jazzer... looking to profile Mr. Powa

sorry

I would rather have lateral grip over off the line then. I do have abs also, and I have 295/30/18 in back because thats all they had when I got it used. I know its not good so I'm not getting those ever again...

Okay, it seems like there's a little confusion.

The sidewall size is not a static figure, it's a percent. A 335/35 and 235/50 have the same height sidewall.

So, saying you have "40s" on the front and you want them to match, does NOT mean that you'd also put 40s on the back; not unless you're running the same width tires front and rear.

It's my biggest beef with the standard metric tire sizing.

250 a tire is my limit, but closer to 200 would be better.

a good budget tire i have found are the Fuzion ZRi's i have a pair on the front of my car (245/40R18) and the are wearing nice and ride pretty nice. and i got them cheap off Ebay. but like speedstang aid, those hankook's are also really nice tires. io have a pair in 275/40R17 when i ran 17's. those hooked pretty good off the line and held their own on the curves too. that was back when i DD'd my car every day no matter what weather and i can confidently recommend them as a good option

You mean 245/35/18"s... correct?

TGR is correct and why I was confused

Powa.... I forgot to ask what are the extreme ends of weather you will experience in these new tires? Will you see any snow or heavy rains? This matters if you are looking for a year round tire and you want, well..... pretty much any kind of grip. You have snow or some major rains with which to contend, you are gonna have to compromise on your tires or get a Winter set.

With this said, your just not going to find a whole lotta grip in your price range Do a little shopping for a Nitto NT555 or Sumi HTR Z III and is gonna be in this ballpark.

Jazzer

No snow aat all, and very little rain. Low in cali is like 40.

I know I can't get an awesome tire for.that
What about something like the hancook v12s?

Is 300 tops a better price? Or will it not be worth going from 250 tops to that. Ill check out the nitto a.d sumi also...

Ya... the Hankook V12's appear to be an alright tire

Not spectacular dry grip, but should get upwards of 30K mileage and will be great in heavy rains. I realize now, I didn't look at your avi, as you are also in Cali. Raising your budget will get you a tire with more grip, but a really great tire is gonna put you at $400+ per tire. My sizes in PS2's are around $475 and my R888's are about the same, so expensive to run good rubber

I've been running Nitto;'s 555 for about a year now, mostly dry conditions. They are the best I've had so far, really good grip and they last long

I think I'll give the hankook v12's a shot. Then next go around see if I need to bump it up again....I've never bought new tires before so they should be better than any of my used ones that Ive got....

255/40/18 for the fronts and 275/40/18 out back? or you said 40 was to tall out back correct? I just hate the way the back looks with 30 profile...

One needs to be careful running a taller tire than OEM in general, but especially when lowered. Doesn't mean it wont work, just need to consider some clearance issues, is all.

OEM tire diameter = 25.6"
255/40/18" diameter = 26"
275/40/18" diameter = 26.7"

When running an ABS equipped Mustang, this system will start to give you sensor issues at about 1" differential (your example here is .7" difference). The light starts to blink on dash, as the brakes begin to chatter on you. This not only removeds 1/2" of clearance around the back tire, but raises the car an equal amount... there goes some of your drop. You also should address speedeometer accuracy issues, as the ODO runs of the rotational speed of the rear wheels. You may not like a 30 profile, but the lower profile make of the same tire, will have less sidewall flex and corner better nearly all of the time (some variables in there)

In order to know if they will likely have more grip than your existing tires, what are you running now? Please include the sizes of front and back

Jazzer

I Like I was saying I have only bought used tires, so what they have is what I get.

255/40/18 currently up front w/ some kind of bridgestones
295/30/18 out back w/ some kind of pirellies

I wouldn't have pick these tires, but I really needed them at the time...I would rather have it lifted out back, then up front. Right now it looks opposite and its higher up front than out back. I get you though Jazz, probably 35 would be better overall...

What I mean is that we cannot compare the likely differences in grip between your current and the ones you want to get as replacements. Bridgetone and Pirelli both make lots of different models, so can you give me the model of them. This way, I can give you some idea as to if the new Hankook V12's will be better, worse or about the same, in terms of grip.

As for diameter... the fronts are 25.9" diameter, where the rears are 25" diameter and why it looks soo funny.
