I did it without the tool and took off the cover (tool didn't exist when I did it), but did not remove the chains. Marked everything up and when it came time to do the actual swap, a friend came over and held it in place while I did the swap. So basically I didn't have to worry about "retiming" it, but I was so close to doing a complete headswap, lookin back I should have done it then. I haven't had the desire to go back in there and complete the full swap.

I finished it. I ended up not even using the tool because it kept getting in the way, biggest waste of $40 ever. The swap was pretty easy.
