Speedometer
Well had my car for awhile now an the speedometer has never worked neither does the odometer an now i want to attempt to fix them. I noticed the what i guess was the speed sensor was unplugged so i plugged it in an car wouldnt go over about 40mph so is it that the sensor could be bad causing all that or something else? Any help would be appreciated.

First do you have an auto or manual? Look towards the tail shaft of the transmission, there will be a cable that goes into it. 2 bolts hold it in, when you pull it our there will be a gear on the end of the cable, held on by a snap ring IIRC, chances are if you speedo and odo arent working the teeth are worn off of this gear. replace it. When you spin it (by hand) you should feel 'pulses' in the cable, thats what your cluster uses to determine speed and mileage. if you dont feel pulses you may need to replace the whole cable, or it may not be hooked up to the cluster. Usually the gears are the first problem though. With your 373's your speedo will be off though, and your Odo will read miles faster, as the gear ratio for the cable is set for whatever stock gears came in your car. You can get different gears from steeda for differnet gear sets. But it will never be dead-on. The only way to make it dead on in a 96-98 is to get a dallasmustang.com Speedcal.

I think a big problem might be the wrong style transmission. I don't think the TR3650 started showing up until the new edges, which used the reluctor wheel type speed sensor.

Have you tried replacing the gears in the dash panel?

No I haven't but if those are bad would it cause my car not to go over 40 cause the problem I'm having I think is coming from the speed sensor cause if I plug it in the car won't go over 40 an the spedo still won't work but I just don't wanna go buy one an that not fix the problem.

The Speedo and odometer can be fixed, most likely, by replacing the little neoprene gears in the gauge cluster itself. As far as car not going over 40, wont fix that. Sounds like 2 separate problems

Are you saying that car doesnt go faster than 40mph, or the speedometer wont read any higher than 40?

I had the speedo/odometer problem also. Not the 40mph problem. But I replaced the gears in the instrument cluster. Takes about 30 mins. The gears are made of a plastic type material will probably be disintergrated. The transmission should be a t45.

The cluster never works but when I plug in the speed sensor it still doesn't Work an the car won't go over 40 so I just leave it unplugged an someone told me that when a speed sensor goes out it will cause that to happen like some kind of safety feature does anyone know if that's true?
