Changed valve cover gaskets... have a question about the RTV


changed valve cover gaskets, did the whole RTV on the two spots where neccessary, i'm wondering, how long would be ok until i can test drive it to see if everything is buttoned up right. its already been a few hours.

You should let the rtv be dry for about four hours before putting the coolant then about 24 hours before turning it on. That's just a recommendation.

coolant?? i didn't drain any coolant, i just replaced my valve cover gaskets and also painted them blue! i'm really excited and i'm curious as to how its going to run....

Let it sit over night, if you rush it while its still setting you're going to regret it and have to do it all over again. IMO that is. I did a water pump with the RTV also and started it up 30 minutes later.

Is the RTV actually used to seal up the valve covers (never seen them on a 97 Mustang)? When I did my wife's valve cover, it had a gasket and I used RTV in 3 spots. But that was just to hold the gasket on while getting it put in place. I drove it right after I tightened everything up since it wasn't for sealing.

You don't need it at all. But there are four recommended spots to keep it in place and to prevent a common leak.

Its there to hold the gasket. its a spot that is between the head valve covers and front cover. Mostly so oil will not seep out. but it will be fine.
