NON PI HELP...CAN IT BE BUILT WELL

HEY GUYS IM ON A NEW PROJECT, THE NON PI MUSTANG. I WAS READING SOME ARTICLES ABOUT NON PI HEADED CARS WITH CAMS AND BOLT ON MAKING 270HP. I KNOW PORTED NPI HEADS CAN FLOW REALLY WELL, OR EVEN JUST CLEANING THEM UP. WITH MY LIMITED CASH ON THIS PROJECT I WANT TO KEEP THE NPI HEADS, AND LEAVE THEM ALONE, NOW I NEED TO KNOW WHAT I WOULD NEED TO DO TO PUT A BEEFY AFTERMARKET CAM IN IT, PI DERIVED OR NON PI SPECIFIC CAMS, WHICH CAM WOULD BE BEST, AND WHAT WOULD NEED TO BE DONE FOR THE NPI HEADS TO ACCEPT THE BIGGER CAMS. AND IS THE PI INTAKE GOOD OR SOME AFTERMARKET INTAKE, THANKS ALOT ANY INFO IS NEEDED. THANKS AGAIN.

The PI intake swap is awesome do that for sure and with the cams and alot of bolt ons you might see 270.. maybe. That is only if you use An aftermarket Cam. Comp sells one that will work in the NPI head with new Cam bolts. But unless you want to do valvesprings and go big you aren't going to see much power out of them.

Theres a few articles on this forum on how to do the cam and intake swaps. But to put into perspective the uselessness of NPI heads Musclemustangs and fast fords tried to get 300rwhp out of a NPI mustang.
You are probably going to have to get the heads ported and im thinking finding a set of Pi heads would be cheaper!

thanks man, i plan on valve springs, and that article showed comp 262 cams, i plan on using trickflow 275 cams, with much higher lift and duration. and if im not mistaken the non pi heads allow more clearance between piston and valves, and i would not have to dish pistons. i could be wrong but all the articles i have read guys were seeing 270+ hp at wheels with large cams and bolt ons like headers, intake CAI. ill post the articles about the npi motors i found.

Your definately going to need a better intake than the npi. Look sor an svo / zeus intake if your dead set on sticking with the npi heads. A stock pi intake would even be worlds better than the stock npi.

Just buy a PI intake off AM, they're relativity cheap. Unless you're building it stick with a stage one. You will need adjustable cam gears and new bolts. If you go any larger you will need to springs and retainers. If you want a stage two or three to work to maximum advantage you will need to notch your pistons also. Unless you retard your timing far enough back, but at that point you're defeating the whole point of going with a stage two.

+1 on the PI intake. Really lets the car breath after 4500 rpm, great upgrade! Cheap to.

thanks guys, also what is the biggest cam i could go with without notching pistons, not worried about retainers and what not ill take care of that, this is what i was reading

NickMckinney " Just got back a run on with basically a stock NPI motor with PI intake, offroad X, shorty headers, loudmouth catback, C&L plenum, and CAI on these small specs (in a Mustang)":
222/226 duration at 050
525/500 lift
108/114 centerlines
111LSA
Found this over at TCCoA, was posted in October. I wanna know more about this.
273 hp with just bolt ons, a pi intake, and stock npi heads?? hell yes!! Hope this is a sign of things to come for NA NPI motors.

You can run a Stage One no issues, but once you hit a stage two you will start to have to notch, unless you retard your timing very far back that is. Then you're kind of defeating the purpose at that point

Nick McKinney is one of the most reputable and most bad@$$ modular motor builders around. He knows his stuff.
