Speedometer not working properly
I'm new to the forums, and new to Mustangs, and I liked the way this site looked so I thought I'd give it a shot here. Figured I'd give a brief story on the car currently in my possession.
My dad bought a new 1996 Mustang GT right off the lot, and kept the car for awhile. It of course had a lot of problems with it and broke a lot and such, but he kept the car for it's whole existence, no matter what. Ran into a few problems, sold it to his buddy for a few months, and soon bought it back when things were better. He gave it a fresh coat of paint, and had it looking, and sounding exactly how he wanted. He loved that car as much as he loved me, which is why I was stunned when he gave it to me as a Christmas present this past Christmas. I couldn't have been happier. Here's the most recent picture I've taken of the car edit: not allowed to post pictures or links yet The car is perfect to me and I love it. The only problem is, I'm not allowed to drive it just yet. I'm 17, and I live with my mom, and she said I'm not allowed to drive it until the speedometer is fixed. A few years back, my dad swapped the engine for a 1999 Cobra engine. Everything works in the car, except for the speedometer. I'll be going about 20 MPH, and the speedometer will read 100 MPH, or it will just move about aimlessly. I was hoping that someone would have a solution to this problem, because I've yet to get a straight answer, or the same answer from anyone. I've heard that it's as simple as getting a speedometer recalibration tool and doing it yourself, to taking it to a shop for a couple hundred dollars, so I thought I'd ask the people that know the most about this type of problem Thanks in advance! |

well with the cobra engine and trans in the car it wont read unless you get the Ford SpeedCal or something similar. Your car originally had a mechaincal "gear" driven speedometer. With the later cobra motor and trans has a electronic speedometer. You will either have to switch cluster to a newer one 99+ model with the electronic speedo or get the speedcal.

<--- keeps Windows open WAY too long, prior to posting and didn't consider the Cobra swap either
![]() Congrats on a cool new ride and welcome to MM"s ![]() If the speedo is not consistant, my guess it is a sensor issue or one with the speedometer itself. Take a look at ***THIS*** page with the same issues as you describe and possible related prolem with ***THESE*** gears. GL ![]() Jazzer
