So..why does the hp/trq decrease over the years?

I'm trying to find out all reasons I can to see why our cars lose hp. I see how one guy's (Matt I think) said his puts out 192hp and 220 ft/lbs in his 96. All I can think of is:

worn spark plugs/ignition wires
crappy walmart air filters
deposits in throttle body, fuel injectors, cylinder walls, etc.
worn out exhaust pipes (maybe)

Anything else? I would like to get my car as close back to 215/285 as it can. This isn't important just something I'd like to know for future reference.

ur car never was at 215 to the wheels. The hp number we get from the factory is an engine estimate. By the time the power runs down through the drivetrain we generally ten to loose 20-30 hp.

Matts car is a really bad example to get numbers from. His car wasn't tested under optimal conditions. His altittude is about 6000ft higher then sea level, which we all no thin air isn't good for anything.

ur best bet to actually put 215 to the wheels is upgrade ur coils n wires, ditch ur cats, pi intake manifold, and good plenum, tb combo with a plastic CAI

20-30hp from the drivetrain, damn that sucks. If I'm lucky I'm putting out 170. No wonder the new models with a v6 can still give me a good run.

you can loose a little torqu and hp in the bottom end, but you gain more in the top end b/c the engine can breath better.

I'm not too crazy about having to rev near 6k just to reach peak hp. I hate that. To me 4400 is a good spot.

unless you have pi parts on you car (99-04intake heads cams) you dont need to be revving ur car past 48-4900rpms. 96-98 mustangs dramatically drop in power after that. Matt was reving his that high because he just recently swapped out his npi intake manifold for a pi intake manifold.

Yeah, I know. I know the PIs get most of their power around 5800 or so for some but that's so close to redline and it takes longer to rev it up that high.

6 k isn't really that close to redlining. Simple solution to taking to long to rev that high.........gears. Put some 3.73 or 4.10's and u'll get up there right quick

Oh, and you know what, I've never seen a pi intake manifold for sale that doesn't say it needs the pi heads. so how did you guys do that?

http://www.moddedmustangs.com/forums...ap-vt1878.html

you should be able to find all your answers about a PI intake swap to NPI heads. If your stumpted somewhere along the way, just post a question in there and I'm sure someone will post an answer

Oh ok, I see. He just siliconed the area on the npi head to avoid the coolant leak. Ehh, guess it works especially if you don't want to spend over a grand on new heads too.

I can show you pictures of how much to use too!

What does you axle code say on your build sticker in the jam of the drivers door? If its M = 2.73s and the rest I can tell you if you need me too!

Yeah, it's an M. Damn, I expected it to be 3 something. Cause I found a formula for calculating the speed and rpm based on the gears and differential and 3.55 I think was close to what I get. Maybe 2.73s will be more accurate.
