1997 GT Rear End Drama

I recently had a new driver side rear axle put in because I bent the old one in a mishap (crash) on the freeway when I hydroplaned across six lanes of traffic in the rain & launched myself, rear end first, up an embankment. Anyways, replaced bent axle, replaced cracked rotor, drove it maybe thirty miles when I needed to get some air in my rear driver side tire. Got air, pulled out of gas station and when clutch was fully disengaged, and while turning right, it sounded like I was dragging a heavy duty chain. The noise made me think my exhaust had broke free from the hangers. Since I didn't want to further damage anything, I had it towed home and have not driven it since. What's wrong? What suggestions do you guys have? I'm a single Mom on a limited income, but my car IS very important to me and I do drive it pretty hard (for a girl).

Thanks,
Melanie

The carrier is probably bad, especially so considering it does this only when turning. I'd take it to your mechanic, it shouldn't be an expensive repair, you can find the stock carriers used on eBay for under $50. Have your mechanic be sure that's the problem first though before you purchase anything.

I love it... Youre the shit. :award

Bent axle, they replaced it and it WAS ok until you got air and pulled out ? So for those 30 miles it was ok, no noise or anytihng? That makes me think its not the carrier. If youre carrier was bad, 30 miles of driving would have been screaming, and turning if the clutch packs were bad, it would have chattered and or dragged a tire around. Did they check the axle bearings ? Because if you had enough force to bend an axle, then im sure the bearigns arent all there. Also have them check the axle tube, may have cracked. I have had expierence with bend axles mostly on trucks and most of them needed axle, drum, and bearing/seals. I have seen the bearing housings bent as well.

So we can only give you a basic idea. A technician that you trust should re check everything.

I agree. they should have replaced the bearing as well. I have also seen in cases like this, the c-clip that retains the axle can break. This would allow the axle to walk out and with disc brakes onthe rear, the caliper mount would be the only thing retaining it.

It could be a possible damaged side gear that just now showed up. I ran across one we broke at the track and it didn't show up till a week later. Sounded very much like what you described.

Replace your rear end fluid but when you drain it look to see if you have any metal coming out when my car batted a curb it ended up ruining the posi unit so i ended up replacing the whole rear end

Thank you for all the responses; it's good to know I can post legit questions and get legit answers. This is a great site and I plan to stick around. Thanks. Oh, the problem was solved after I returned the car o the mechanic. Something was loose in/at/around the caliper. Thanks a lot for the good advice.

Sweet! Problem solved, love seeing that!! Also, my back end looks tilted a little off. It just looks like it, haven't actually got a level or anything and did anything, tires are aired up, too.
