Well when its really hot out side and I dont run 91 I get a check engine light, Again at higher altitude you should run higer octane anyway so I think that that has something to do with it

Well altitude definitely affects things, so if teh 91 is making it stop pinging, I will allow this behavior to continue. For now. lol

matt you really need to listen for pinging. pinging usually occurs in higher gear and higher rpms. My car pings in 5th when I press the gas to WOT sometimes. and unless your car is pinging you dont need hi octane gas.

If you don't have a Cobra, tune, or some crazy specific reason that 91-94 is required, run 87. Save that money your spending and buy a tuner and have a good reason to run 93. I used to run 93 in my car before this one sometimes, and I realized it didn't do anything.
Everytime you fill up an entire gas tank your putting about $3 more into it than needed. Assuming you fill up once a week, that's about $156 dollars a year your burning up on premium. That could be a gear or something in the long run!

I will fill up on 87 next time and see if my CEL trips and if I hear pinging!

pinging doesn't always occur at high rpm's. It can happen anywhere in the rpm range, and usually occurs when you first mash the throttle.

No, not at all, actually. I've had many cars & worked on many cars ( I served 4 years of my apprenticeship to be a mechanic) over the years that ping as soon as you drive away in 1st gear. If the timing is off, or you have a higher performance car with the wrong octane, it will have detonation as soon as the engine is under load.
