timing question

How is the correct way to tell if you motor is at TDC. I have turned the crank all the way until it says that it is on TDC according to the mark and the HAYNES manual says that the bolt on the back of the cam should be parallel with valve cover surface, but it is not when the crank is at TDC. I have taken the heads off now but I want to make sure witch way is the correct way so when I put the new ones on they go on the right way so I don't kill my pistons. Thanks for the help.

The crank gears or gear depending on the engine, some are one pc. some are two, anyhow. the dots are to be at 6 o'clock or facing down Take the chains ans lay them flat on a table squeeze the chain together and stretch them out straight so all the links are touching.

Sorry not to scale, but you get the point, you need to use a paint marker to mark the chain end to end. Align these ends with the crank dots and cam dots keeping tension on the chains in clockwise rotation to avoid jumping or lock tensioners fully. You cannot be off by doing it that way, be sure not to rotate the engine until you have both chains aligned properly as it will take dozens of rotations for them to return back 52 total turns if IIRC. Lock the tensioners< very important <<<<< and you'll be good to go.

Matt you will use the same process when you degree your cams, however you will be pulling it apart 10-15 times until you get the ICL (intake centerline) correct. It sucks, but until someone comes up with a reliable adjustable gear you have to keep grinding untill you get it set with'in a half of a degree or less.......Or pay for my gas for me to come do it for you LOL......
