big problem need help

my car failed the mass inspection for emissions. the guy at the shop where i got my sticker said i need all the O2 sensors and the egr valve because it had 8 codes. i researched the codes and this is true. but i don't have the money to do all this right now cause im going back to school soon and cant work anymore but i need to get a sticker. here is my plan i was wondering what you guys thought and if it will work. i am going to clean and replace the egr myself and then i have a buddy who does custom exhausts so i was going to have him put an O/R x pipe or something with no cats and new mufflers and then install mils without changing the sensors so that my CEL wont throw anymore codes and will hopefully pass emissions (since there are no codes). i think this is the cheapest way to go and much better then just replacing the sensors for all that money and no hp gains like the new exhaust will. please help me and any other ideas will be aprieciated.

do they measure the exhaust itself, as in what comes out of the tailpipe?

if they measure exhaust out the tailpipe... nes says you will still fail emissions.

im can remember u asking about this before or some1 else, but if it is u and they only check for the codes, the MIL will work, but if they measure form ur tailpipes it iwll do nothing for u except take ur CEL off

BS.......florida state emissions only check ur tail pipe and u can pass with an o/r pipe. Most speed shops i've been to can pass any catless GT 96 and up. Something about them burning cleaner then the 5.0's.

they dont hook anything up to the tail pipe just to the computer and it would cost about the same because i know the exhaust guy and he hooks me up and i want to put an exhaust on anyway so i figure it will save me money

Check with the local laws in your area. Some emission control stations in WA visually check for catalytic converters. As is the same when I lived in CA but not AZ. Emissions laws change yearly, and in different counties within states as well. One station may require cats, whereas one in a different county may only check the readings at the tailpipe opening.
