Valve cover options

I am looking to dress up my motor when i rebuild it. What are my options for valve covers for a 2v? I have only found the BBK ones and i know they are a pain to install.

You could have Googled those names in the same amount of time it took you to type that. Even less.

Memphis ,you would need to sand them down .You can use the Dupli Color high temp along with their clear coat.Thats what I used, and they look nice.

Dont need to sand them down. Just use some SEM adhesive promoter. And Duplicolor high temp paint. Or krylon fusion paint.

If you want the primer to bond to the pores of the covers, you should prep it right. You can use promoter, primer etc. Im talking about plastic here.

I washed everything down really good with Dawn liquid soap and a brush. For the front cover I used a wire brush.

I sanded the covers .I think I started with a 200+ grit ,went to like a 320,and finished with off with a 600. Basically I used just enough to get it scuffed pretty good, and graduated the smoothness. Then I used a tack cloth to clean them up and rinsed any left over dust.

Each piece got about 2 coats primer,3 coats paint ,and 3-4 coats of clear. I used the high temp Duplicolor products. You can get it at Advance Auto etc. I spent a few hours on prep. Then I allowed about a day for each product to cure before applying the next. So primer coats one day ,paint the next ,clear to finish. You could probably do it sooner than that ,but I had my motor apart anyways,so I wasn't in a hurry.

BTW- Though its not necessary ,I highly recommend one of these spray can handles/triggers. It will allow you to get nice even strokes and a even amount of paint.. You can get one at Wal-Mart etc for $3-4 bucks, maybe less.

Great! Thanks for explaining that. I have thought about doin that for a while. I might have to find some extra stock valve covers to paint then switch them cuz I don't have a different car to drive for 3 days.

It's easy to get the covers off isn't it?

I dont think you have to take 3 days. I took that long cuz my motor was apart ,so I wasn't in a hurry. The paint has directions on how long it should set.Its like 10 minutes between coats of primer etc.. And a few hours between the next step.

If you have the proper swivel joints and extensions, you can get them off. The driver side is the PITA side. If you pull the covers, that a good time to replace cover gaskets. Get a Haynes manual so you know how to rewire the spark plug wires.

Take pics of everything so you know the best way to reinstall the spark plug wire looms etc. Also theres a certain sequence you need to go in to re-tighten everything.Overall its not that bad with some patience. Like I said though,I already had the heads off and everything else.
