If you want an off the shelf grind the Hitech 2 and 3 are a better choice for a stock or ported head.

so i went and got a price quote on the installation of cams on my buddies 98GT

the shop wanted 9 hour labor, and then additional 5 to chance the valve springs.

he then quoted me at a 500 dollars for a first time dyno tune, and 100 bux for each retune. He also offered another deal where he offer750 for the first tune, and u get and sct tuner with it.

Thoughts guys?

Time and money seem fair compared to local costs.

Definatly go with the SCT tuner. And well i have never heard the term Chance the Valve springs, all they have to do is drop the other ones on.

change the valve springs, sorry

but isn't that dyno tune a little high..........i mean 500 bux just to run the car because its the first time seems pricey. And 750 with a tuner even seems up there.

I have seen ported npi's pick up more than the ported P.I heads when proplerly worked on an N/A application with a P.I grind or custom cam for that matter.

but shouldn't a aftermarket PI cam, say vt stage 2's by comp, give u the power u would gain from goign NPI to PI, + the power u get because the cam is aftermarket.

From what i was told, weather i go PI stock, or PI aftermarket, I'm only going to gain 20.

My cams and heads usually add up to 50+ on he dyno, do the math. I don't care what head it is. I have newer grinds that work.

For a daily driver combo it is 50+ for both, trust me there is a ton more to be had with a more aggressive profile and heavy porting. The only downfalls to a more aggressive camshaft is drivability.

750 is what the guy wants to charge for a first time dyno and u get to keep the xcal.......

he charges 100 bux for every additional retune on the dyno....

were pretty much looking at the same munbers here

but the more and more i think about the cost of cams and how much power im gonna get i feel i should just save the money and by a blower and put it on myself with the help of a friend. 2500 bux just to get cams installed, not tuned and only receive 25+ hp isn't worth it IMO. I was under the impression that i could gain a minumum of 40rwhp if i put aftermarket PI cams in my NPI heads. Apparently thats not the case.

Ya but u will proly want to build up ur bottom end first before u blow it out. I just hear so much that it is the right thing to do before the s/c. I have heard of people fuckin their engines up not gettin a forged bottom end before they start pushin tons of hp. And I have no clue how much that would cost. It seems like it would cost a lot.

Just throwing in my two sense I guess. I don't actually know for sure but I have seen other people to be claiming at least 20hp if not a little more with the VT stage 2's. Like I said I don't know for sure though, noone I know directly has those cams, but those are the ones that I want as well. I was going to buy and install, but now I got sent on deployment so that will have to wait until I get back.

Around here a dyno tune is $500, not sure if that includes a chip or not. But if you use a hand held tuner to tweecer then you have to buy that your self. So there your looking at $850 or better. I say the guy is decent on his price, but sounds like maybe hes not good a tuning. I mean shouldnt the tuner itself after a tune on a stock engine get you atleast 5 rwhp????

he has a bad habit of if u spend a decent amount of money at his shop at once, he'll flash ur drive for free with one of his canned tunes that he actually wrote for sniper.

i think thats y he doesn't see huge results when it comes to a tuner, because half the time he's already tuned ur car for u.

his cars don't make numbers, but they make track slips.

some guy was claiming he was pushing a 560hp termi with just a ported eaton blower and exhaust and pulley. Even had the dynosheet to probe it. This guy put his car on his dyno saying theres no way in hell a ported eaton could do that, and it turns out he was right, his dyno only gave the car like 485.
