4.10 Gear swap in 98 cobra

I have a 98 cobra that I am wanting to change out the stock 3.27's for some 4.10s and get a tuner for it and i had a few questions-

First- Are 4.10's to much for a daily driver?....what Rpm's do you turn going 70?

I know that after changing the gears I the speedometer will be off, since this is a manual transmission do i need to get a speedometer recalibration gear from steeda? or can i just get a gear kit from mustangtunging.com that comes with the gears and the X-Calibrator 2 from SCT since i am looking to get a tuner too.

Or do i need both?

Thanks

You have a 5 speed, so I would suggest 3.73s, but 4.10s are not too much gear. at 70, in o/d, i turn 3k rpms. you could be set with a speedcal

Yes, that's correct. You may want the XCal-2 then, to optimize gains on what is already done. If you drive highway a lot or don't see much track time if any, then 3.73s may be the best.

IF your keeping it n/a 4:10's would be just the thing for the extra umph. As a daily driver if you get a none brand name they wine a little, work just as well as say fords racing gears but when going through gears at normal speeds they wind up, then down when decreasing speed. Not to noticable unless your in the back seet. There bad if you plan on a s/c because you will be in 4th way before you know it cause they are steep.

I keep hearing everybody say that when the swapped to 3.73's that they wish they had went ahead with the 4.10's. I drive it mostly at night and on the weekends....i dont really have any intention of it being a track beast or anything....i just want people to see the cobra badge and know i mean business...

There are so many of the 96-98 cobras that just dont seem like they are as fast as they should be

There not as fast as they could be and thats true. But keep in mind they came with 305 horse which is 45 over a stock gt so thats a huge upgrade. None the less there pretty responsive to some mods. Get some cams, exaust, gears, and better flowing heads, and while your at it a 75 shot. Then your really ganna mean seriouse buisness!

go w/ the 4.10's. It's a Cobra so it likes to rev a little high to keep it on the powerband. A lot of the 4V guys use 4.30's.

Yeah this is no joke. Im agree'n with Twist. Have any of you recommending 3.73's ever driven a Cobra... or any 32v ford car. They LOVE to be held in the upper rpms. And they just keep pulling and pulling. I say go with 4.10's. They will bring you to the power range so much quicker than a 3.73 will. Also its a 1998 so youre gonna need a new transmission speedo gear for the gear when you put them in. Cant use a elect. programmer for it because our speedo clusters are stupid. 99+ you can. Everyone of my buddys with Mach 1's go with 4.30's. Amazing gear for those 32v's.

I've driven a stock cobra, and they do hang up there really good to 7k rpms. If others are doing it no problem, then do it. The steeper the gear, the better

I had a set of FRPP 4.30s but opted for the 4.10s. 4V love rpms. I would not hesitate to put 4.10s in a dd. I only turn 2350 at 70 with 4.10s on my 5 speed but I do have the 3560 tranny which I believe has a different 5th gear ratio. I have a buddy with a 97 Cobra 5 speed. He recently had 3.73s installed and now wishes he would have went with more gear. Not a bad time to upgrade the axles and locker especially if you going to run drag radials or stickies.

I Think ill go with the 4.10's, tuner and speedo gear since you apparently have to have it.

does anyone know how hard it is to change out the speedo gear in the tranny? I know they arn't expensive.... steeda makes one for like 15 or so.

Black.... put the car up and look on the left side of the trans. there will be a black tube sticking out with a white center. remove the 8mm bolt and remove it. then take off the metal clip holding it on and replace it.

Thats all.
